PostAnimal Crossing: New Horizons (Switch) - 20/03/2020
by Robbo-92 » Tue Jun 11, 2019 6:04 pm

Edit, as it now looks like I’ve inherited the Animal Crossing New Horizons thread I thought I best attempt something that resembles a reasonable opening post, I’ll add a few more bits in over time but just a couple of videos for now.

Official reveal trailer,

First gameplay courtesy of Nintendo Treehouse at E3,

If the hustle and bustle of modern life’s got you down, Tom Nook has a new business venture up his sleeve that he knows you’ll adore: the Nook Inc. Deserted Island Getaway Package! Sure, you’ve crossed paths with colorful characters near and far. Had a grand time as one of the city folk. May’ve even turned over a new leaf and dedicated yourself to public service! But deep down, isn’t there a part of you that longs for…freedom? Then perhaps a long walk on the beach of a deserted island, where a rich wealth of untouched nature awaits, is just what the doctor ordered!

Peaceful creativity and charm await as you roll up your sleeves and make your new life whatever you want it to be. Collect resources and craft everything from creature comforts to handy tools. Embrace your green thumb as you interact with flowers and trees in new ways. Set up a homestead where the rules of what goes indoors and out no longer apply. Make friends with new arrivals, enjoy the seasons, pole-vault across rivers as you explore, and more!

This new addition to the Animal Crossing series launches March 20, 2020, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch system.

FEATURES:

- Customise your character and home, and decorate the landscape (with furniture, if you like!), as you create your very own island paradise.
- Experience a robust new crafting system—collect materials to construct everything from furniture to tools!
- Enjoy a variety of relaxing activities like gardening, fishing, decorating, interacting with charming NPCs, and more, as classic Animal Crossing experiences come to life in fun new ways within the deserted-island setting.
- Up to eight players can reside on an island; four residents of the same island can play together simultaneously on a single system.
- Eight players can play together on one player’s island via online* multiplayer or local wireless**.

It looks good? Naturally I’m disappointed its been pushed back to March 2020 but I still think we could have seen some more about it, I mentioned in the other thread I was worried it’d be delayed when we had 10 minutes to go and hadn’t seen it yet and sadly that turned out to true :(

Edit, new video form the Nintendo Direct on 04/09/19.

Edit, official box art!

Looks lovely, really shaping up to be my game of 2020 so far

Edit, to go alongside the GOTY 2020, they’ve announced a lovely Animal Crossing themed console. Every time they announce something to do with this game it just makes me yearn for it more and more

It’s time....... we have a 25 minute direct focused on Animal Crossing New Horizons! Airing at 2pm on Thursday the 20th of February. Considering how little we’ve seen of this the direct could be something special

Animal Crossing New Horizons has now released! And it’s truly wonderful  I hope everyone is enjoying spending their free time on their (temporarily) deserted island :toot:

Yeah, I noticed that something like "An update" appeared just before the AC trailer rolled and I guessed that that meant a delay. It's frustrating... but, hey, it did look great! I'm ready to AC on a desert island!

Not being playable on the showfloor was the clue this wasn’t making 2019 I guess.

Concept is neat but slightly disappointed by the ambition graphically. I expected it-they’re probably reusing a lot of Amiibo Festival assets but I was hoping for something more radical than what is essentially New Leaf HD.

The Wii U Animal Crossing plaza thing could have been a great new direction.

That final shot-a load of human characters definitely suggests a big online component.

Yeah I was expecting slightly more from it graphically, still looks really nice though. I wonder if the shot at the end shows you can have a lot of players all visiting one island at one time? If so will we need a special GRcade island?

This is on the Treehouse. Prepare for info blowout. Maybe.

Be good to get a better look, either way.

I’m surprised they need until March for this.

It’s looking very polished on Treehouse.

Yeah, this look so damn bliss. A lot of small improvements all around. Shame about delay, but this is looking like a pretty big game so I don't mind.

It does look really nice, nice that they have Northern and Southern Hemisphere as options for the seasons in this one.

Looks like a bit more structured progression with definite goals, which will lend itself to couch coop.

Wish I could gauge how big the island is from that segment. Allowing for up to 8 friends to visit at once should mean it's bigger than the map gives it credit for.

From what I could tell by the small map that appeared in the corner, it appears to be 7x6 acres, which I think is the largest we've had.

Only thing this is missing is proper free camera control. Being the first proper HD console AC game, I just thought they'd really be a bit more ambitious.

Wait what? Could you elaborate please? My second-biggest problem with previous ACs is that I'm lousy at making my own entertainment, and none of the mini-goals (grow house, fill museum, win at HHA) really hooked me enough. A bit more progression could really sell this to me!

I was talking about Nook Miles which they touched on in the Treehouse segment.

Here’s an explanation:
On the NookPhone, you'll find a new feature called "Nook Miles." This works like actual airline mileage programs. You'll earn miles just by flying to the island itself, as well as doing various activities on the island.

Once you've accumulated enough miles, you can exchange them for items and other activities. Nook Miles are just a new way to enjoy the Animal Crossing game. Nook Miles can be seen as a way to make progress in the game in addition to just relaxing. You earn rewards for doing activities that you already like, and even activities that you didn't enjoy before, just because pretty much any activitiy earns these miles.
