PostAnimated Movies Appreciation Thread
by shy guy 64 » Sun Oct 22, 2023 12:36 pm

I love animated movies and love to talk about them. So I'm starting this thread for that very thing. come hear to talk about any and all animated movies, traditional, CGI, stop-motion, anime, the lot. Tell what you think of various films, whether you love them or hate them. post teasers and trailers for upcoming films. tell us which upcoming films you're excited for and which fill you with dread. Share your pleasant surprises and massive disappointments. Get nostalgic about the one you grew up with or have a discussion about which are suited for kids or not.

So come one come all, fans of animation this is place to talk about them.

We have a family movie night every Saturday so we watch quite a lot of animated films! Some recent viewings and general opinions/recommendations to get the thread going:

Teen Titans Go to the Movies - watched this last week. It's just a long Teen Titans Go! episode and that's fine - unless you don't like TTG in which case avoid like the plague!. The highlight for me was the time travel section.

The Lego Movie (1 and 2) - only got around to watching these recently. Both great films. The bit with Officer Goodcop's parents rivals the shoe going into the dip in Who Framed Roger Rabbit - absolutely harrowing :dread:

Epic Tales - this was a bit shite. Can't even remember what happens to be honest. And who decided to cast Josh Widdecombe as Zeus?!

Back to the Outback - just whacked this on to keep the boy quiet a couple of Christmas Eves ago but it's fantastic! No idea why Netflix don't advertise stuff like this properly.

League of Superpets - as I said in the other thread this is brilliant and legit the best Justice League film.

Highlight for me was Stan Lee declaring that even though it isn't a Marvel movie he just loves to make cameos.

I've been watching the Toy Story films lately with my son. All brilliant

Even the completely unnecessary 4th film is good.

I'm more into the anime side of animated films but I think this is a better thread to talk about them than the anime and manga thread.

A few personal recommendations:

Akira
Ghost in the Shell
Memories - actually an anthology of three shorts but I don't think that really matters
Your Name - utterly brilliant and surprisingly emotional
Porco Rosso
The Wind Rises
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind
Spirited Away
Princess Mononoke
My Neighbor Totoro
The Cat Returns

Porco rosso is a good shout.

My favourite Ghibli film (that I've seen) is Laputa, but the competition is notably fierce! It's one of those films I watched and realised how hugely influential it was. It's on the same level as Blade Runner defining the cyberpunk aesthetic, several games I'd consider the best of all time wouldn't be the games they are without Laputa. The closest Ghibli competition for me is Spirited Away (a universal classic if only one of their films could be called such) and Kiki's Delivery Service - that one surprised me with just how much I enjoyed it, I didn't expect it to top Nausicaa but it did. The Castle of Cagliostro is also fantastic and I'm a Lupin fan, I'm not really sure why Nausicaa generally gets counted as a Ghibli film but Cagliostro doesn't! On Ghibli-adjacent films I also really enjoyed Mary and the Witch's Flower more than I thought I might. I did like Totoro but it wasn't really what I was expecting from my pop culture exposure to it. The actual Totoro scenes were surprisingly limited and I felt like I knew most of them already from osmosis, so I think I was disappointed there wasn't more to it.

Definitely agree with Akira and Ghost in the Shell being other top anime picks. My others would be the Cowboy Bebop movie (not as good as the show perhaps, but that's the highest of high bars!), Redline (being animated is the point, it looks (and sounds) fantastic), and Char's Counterattack (the best Gundam movie).

I'd say Spirited Away is the best introduction. It's like if someone tells you they've never seen a Disney film, knowing nothing else you tell them to watch The Lion King.

I like Porco Rosso but I think it's less representative of Ghibli as a whole.

I’d tell them to watch beauty and the beast or Aladdin

I agree with OrangeRKN, I'd start Ghibli with Spirited Away. Or my personal favourite, Howl's Moving Castle. :shifty:

Tbh I didn't really like Porco Rosso. I should give it another try sometime.
