Didn't Destiny 2 fail (I have no idea if it did as I haven't kept track of it) because of all the various bits of fuckery Bungie and Activision are constantly up to? You'd hope EA learned enough lessons from their own strawberry float ups with Star Wars BF2 for Anthem not to suck balls.

From what I can tell the answer to that is 'partially.' Although all the dodginess didn't help, the game itself was apparently little more than a big expansion that didn't understand why people liked the first game and removed/changed a bunch of stuff people enjoyed without addressing the biggest Destiny problem of all: Endgame content.

As for failing, I'm sure it sold well initially but all I've read since is how player numbers have tanked. There's been a few really interesting pieces written on Destiny focused streamers being forced to diversify as they had simply gotten bored with the game.

If Anthem is as based on the Destiny model as it originally appeared, BioWare are going to need a unique take on the genre to convince people it's worth sticking with.

Amazingly it was pretty much all Bungie (even the micro transaction stuff).

I just hope they don't make the classic Destiny mistake of promising updates at a rate they clearly have huge problems delivering.
I'm looking forward to this and think it will be a great multiplayer and get the old GRCade destiny crew involved with a few from the Sunday gaming team.

- Ancient unknown being leaves behind mysterious and obnoxiously named artifact
- Player characters take unique power from said artifact
- Player characters live with artifact behind a wall
- A mysterious evil (or, I dunno, darkness) threatens said artifact
- A faction of enemies that seem to have fallen from grace

Wow.

The Javelins still look strawberry floating awesome though.

From what I was hearing, it did not sound like this was really built to be played single player. They mentioned how it can be done but it would be harder and the game is balanced for co-op play

If that’s the case it would put me off purchasing this. Plus I wanted to see if you could explore big open areas, what they showed didn’t give me the impression that’s something this game will have

I don't think there's going to be places like the Destiny patrol zones to just wander about in even though doing those with ever evolving enemies would be fantastic.

It would be fair to assume that this’ll have matchmaking, which kinda turns me back onto the game a little bit. This sort of sub-genre always runs the risk of potentially making the player feel a bit...well, a Billy No-mates in SP.

So it's basically Destiny 1 with an in-game plot then?

Oh, also it's online only, no offline play.

If this can perfect the Destiny formula I'm not sure I see a problem with that.
They have the benefit of hindsight and can see the reaction of the fans to the mistakes of Destiny so there's at least a good chance that they can improve on Destiny and if they do I think many people will be happy with that.

Not bothered by the graphical downgrade, or even the Destiny-esque story (as I've not played Destiny), but the gameplay looked pretty boring to me. Maybe I'm getting jaded, but it looked so very, very unexciting.

Get mission -> fly to place -> kill things with your chosen exo-suit's (all rounder, Knuckles, girl ninja or Palpatine) weapon suite -> fly home -> repeat.

I know that most open world games tend to adhere to this basic structure, and it works, but I'm pretty bored of it now.

RPS got to see a closed doors demo and...they weren't really impressed.

https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2018/0 ... m-preview/

The Destiny vibe grows ever louder with each new feature we see. It follows the exosuits everywhere. When one of them collects a bit of lore from a nearby glyph on a cavern wall, when they shoulder their “legendary” weapons, when they pick up glowing loot from felled enemies, when they do silly emotes to one another on the rim of a gaping void, and especially when they enter that deep hole and get into a final fight with a bulbous health bar of a boss.

Overall, it was a flashy demonstration of firepower that I felt I’d seen before (and not just because I’d basically seen the highlights, thirty minutes prior). As an aside, BioWare’s shift from a developer that exclusively tackles ‘guns and conversation’ to one making a ‘shared-world shooter’ seems to have been so strenuous that it has changed their logo. But judging from this show of force and jargon, it might also have changed the company’s internal organs, the BioWare you know for its alien dating sims seems further and further gone the more we learn of Anthem. But it might also just be a change of font. Fonts change, you know.

Although they are careful to repeat the fact they didn't actually play it, according to their write up the similarities to Destiny are even stronger than have been shown.

I can't shake the feeling this is a PUBG/Fortnite deal, where this time the pretender has simply backed the wrong horse.
