Seems to be getting a pasting all over the place. I’m not sure it ever had a chance really. I’m very keen to play it and make up my own mind because it certainly looks fun but logic would probably suggest leaving it at least a couple of weeks on from release.

It was facing an uphill struggle anyway, but EA releasing Apex 2 weeks before it hit killed any momentum it might have built.

While I really wanted this game to be amazing from what I'm reading it's really rather disappointing.

Yeah, I’m the same. I was hoping it would be amazing, but I was disappointed with the beta.

I think I will leave this out unless they have made it amazing at the end. :fp:

I don't get this move either. Releasing their own games in the same release window is what damaged Titanfall 2. But maybe from EA's perspective they're happy to fund 2 competing games if it means 1 will succeed.

NickSCFC wrote:[It's going to be sad to see Bioware and Bungie suffer the same fate due to the two greediest publishers in the industry pushing them towards producing the same game.

I thought Destiny was the game Bungie wanted to make, unless Activision made them change it.

I think the most unforgivable aspect is reports are saying it’s just dull.

Who’s got time for that?

Destiny had very much a grind and not a great deal of content but no one can argue it wasn’t a fun world to be in, control and design wise.

I've been having fun but there's definitely bugs that need working out.

Loading times are way too long and can take place mid-mission.
Mouse cursor keeps appearing during cut scenes and the only way get rid of it is to open the menu, which you cant do mid-cutscene.
Mouse control when flying just doesn't feel anywhere near responsive enough.
Matchmaking can put you with a group who are already halfway through a story mission so you miss a bunch of story. You don't seem to have an option to choose only newly starting mission matchmaking, your only way to guarantee doing a story mission from start to finish is to play in a solo/private session.
The story/mission/expedition launch screen is way fiddler than it needs to be.

I can argue that.

I found Destiny’s world immensely tedious, both of them in fact. The shooting mechanics are good but that’s pretty much all I can say in favour of it.

If that is indeed the case then the game is going to get crushed as looter games first and foremost need to be fun.
Destiny did indeed have many, many problems but it was amazing fun in the groups I played with and had enough variety of character types for everyone to have a part.
I was hoping this was going to be an upgraded destiny with a deeper story and in that it seems to have failed.

Oh, well I'm renting it so will give it a try but my expectations are now suitably low.

The art aspect was and still is above and beyond most current shooters. That with gunplay definitely had a hook on a lot of people.

Same. The group I play with are begging for a true sequel to Destiny. More fleshed out world, character and story etc

I can’t believe a BioWare space epic is going to be dull :(

It’s funny cos they (EA or BioWare) mentioned it’ll be seamless loading in the World, but it is various load times for some people. :fp:

It's contiguous," says Anthem lead producer Mike Gamble. "Once you're in the open world, you just run around the open world. There's no loads. Everything's contiguous. You have access to the whole thing."

Going by the open beta, this game is a mess. I mean, I don't like Destiny 2 but at least that game works right out the gate and doesn't load mid mission either.

From PC Gamer:

That's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to my frustrations with Anthem's loading screens, which are so painfully long and numerous that it's baffling. Different parts of Bastion are tucked behind loading screens, and missions will frequently send you to these places for just a minute, before turning you around and having you sit through another loading screen as you exit them. When finishing a mission, I have to sit through an overly long after action report and then a loading screen to enter the Forge just to see and equip new gear. Then there's another loading screen just to enter Fort Tarsis where, more often than not, I'm going to immediately turn around and queue up a new mission which triggers yet another strawberry floating loading screen. It's maddening.

:dread:

I bet the extensive loading screens are because EA have forced all devs to use frostbite, lord knows how long it takes for a your first map to load in a battlefield game but even then the subsequent maps aren't as bad as I presume it's already loaded some assets. I wonder if frostbite isn't suited to streaming in assets on the fly?

Reviews starting to trickle in:

https://www.vg247.com/2019/02/18/anthem-review/

I went into Anthem with an open mind. It’s a game I wanted to succeed from a studio I’ve always been fond of. Unfortunately, it’s everything everyone feared at reveal. It’s a hollow experience that’s been designed to appeal to the widest market possible while squeezing more money out of those who are hooked in by its doggy treat design.

Also, and I don't mean to keep going on about this game, but it's really worth watching the reveal video again and just how far away it is from the finished product.

The story space of Tarsis especially looks nothing like the sterile, Chuck-E-Cheese ass NPC-a-thon in the released game.

I was hugely tempted by this but the demo really showed the game and it's issues clearly. Much like destiny it looks like a game that the sequel to could be amazing.

More chance of seeing Half Life 3 than Anthem 2.

I think this year it'll go free to play or at least free on ps plus like Destiny 2 did.

Wish my image sig would work

Eurogamer First 10 hours:

Anthem's cause isn't helped by a litany of bugs and flaws that feel inexcusable for a title that's coming this late to the game. Preferences aren't saved, requiring a trip to the in-game menus on each new play, rewards bug out at the end of punishing missions demanding replays to grab new loot, or sometimes progress simply isn't recognised, putting impossible roadblocks in the way of players. It seems sadly typical of a game on EA's in-house engine Frostbite to launch in such a troubled state, and the defence of the true release date not coming until later this week doesn't wash, putting too much weight on an inbound day one patch to do the impossible.

Yet still beneath all that there is the spark of something in Anthem - a glimmer in its Rocketeer-like jetpacks, or in the dazzle of its chaotic combat. As ever with a game designed to monopolise your free time, Anthem's real merits won't come into focus for weeks, when it becomes clear how quickly EA and BioWare can fight fires while catering to players' demands. Then there's the question of whether BioWare has enough to time to do justice to a fascinating, deeply flawed game.

Metro - Review In-Progress

Perhaps the flying and verticality of Anthem will become more important in later missions but, at the moment, Anthem feels like less than sum of its parts. Since it’s a game as a service title it will no doubt see enormous change over its lifetime and we welcome that, because we’d hate to see the basic mechanics go to waste. We’d say the graphics too, but as technically impressive as they are the art design is horribly generic, in terms of both the tech and the monsters.

This game needed more time in the oven but then how much more does BioWare need after 5 years?

Maybe this is the first example of the hardware in the current gen being the problem?
I wonder if they'll get the chance to do a next gen version so we can see if that has drastically less loading?

This is a bizzare game. I've played maybe 17 hours so far? I'm level 24 or something and I've done every story mission bar the last and that includes every side mission that has so far become available to me. It really is a game of two halves.
The Fort Tarsis dialogue NPC stuff is classic Bioware. Getting to know characters and influence the environment (slightly) and character interaction is....ok, but physically going about it is tedious and the interactions themselves are a bit dull compared to the Mass Effect and Dragon Age series. Bioware lite.

The actual action gameplay is great! But the mission structure is dull, and the loading screens, bugs etc, everything that has been well documented by others is tedious.

In a way, I think I would prefer if they got rid of Fort Tarsis altogether and just have a free roaming open world with NPC's as radio chatter and menus for gear, because what I saw in E3 is beyond today's tech and they sold us a lie.

I like aspects of the game but not enough. It doesn't have that "special sauce" that Destiny or indeed The Division (post 1.8.1. patch) has, and I suspect it never will. I'll finish the campaign and wander about in freeplay for a bit and then not play anymore (i.e. wont renew my Origin Premier pass).

Performance has been good for me by the way. 3440 resolution with everything on ultra at well over 60fps. It looks lovely just not E3 lovely and not enough for me to keep going.
Right! after the last mission i'm off to try Metro: Exodus and get back to Destiny 2 before Crimson Doubles is finished!
