Oh, and I also had to completely dissemble the machine to replace all the thermal compound that was splurg everywhere as the machine was running at over 100 degrees while just browsing the Internet.

Oh and one more thing, the cutout on the back of the screen that features the famous wanky glowing Apple logo, actually causes it to impress that shape on the LCD screen, so you have white pressure marks in the centre of your screen forever. Just so that Apple can have that "look". Great design there. This can't be fixed without replacing the screen. Which by Apple means replacing the entire top assembly, which costs about £500 I believe.

So that's 7 issues? I think that literally makes it the most problematic piece of technology I've owned, and most these problems manifested during the lifetime of the machine, between a few weeks and a few years.

Oh wait there's one more stupid design decision they did address in the next model, the edges of the bottom panel are razor sharp, it's literally not rounded off at all, which digs into your hands when resting your palms on the touchpanel for more than a few minutes. It's seriously uncomfortable. I've considered putting my laptop under my cnc mill and taking it off myself.. Although I don't really want to do that for obvious reasons.

I literally burnt my legs the other day the thing runs so damn hot, even with arctic silver 5 compound replacement.

But it does Facebook tho hun?

My iMac cost 2 grand and the Wi-Fi broke within a week, to the point where it would knock the hub and any connected devices out whenever I tried to connect. The Apple shop I bought it from said there was nothing wrong with it and refused to replace it. They suggested I buy a £200 router.

A friend of mine also bought an iMac for animation and rendering work. The GPU died by melting itself. After a few repairs I think eventually he got rid of it and built a PC.

The Apple bubble will eventually burst just as with any fashion icon and while they won't disappear they will become just another tech company rather than what they are today.
The money problem has more to do with the rather insane idea that the US taxes US companies even on sales and profit made in other countries. They are as far as I know the only country to do that and as soon as Apple brings the craploads of cash they have back to the US they will get a hefty tax bill.

It's not just companies.

The US expects citizens who move to another country to live and work to continue paying US taxes as well as the taxes of whatever country they now live in, even if that person has citizenship of the new country and no intention of living in the US again. The only way around it is to renounce your US citizenship.

Do any of the laptop manufacturers have a good track record though when it comes to reliability? I've had a myriad of brands over the years & they've all developed hardware or software faults and ultimately packed up after about 5 years. Though admittedly none of them cost me more than £1200. The Sony's were the closest to looking Apple-esque in terms of design but then died just like the rest, though I can't fault Sony's customer service at the time. They even gave me a little blue cloth and cleaned everything.

The same things seem to die though (the screen, the hard drive, or the graphics card).

It's just silly and it's no wonder why so few people emigrate from the US as unless you're going to get paid a fortune paying double tax is going to take them well above 50% tax.

I think the main difference is that most companies don't try and actively punish customers for trying to refurbish a machine with other people or have those technicians run out of business which Apple have shown they're more than willing to do.
The above video of a guy with a £4k machine who couldn't even pay to get it fixed because Apple didn't have the parts and the people that did would likely lose their licence to be Apple technicians is a prime example.

Is that why Boris Johnson scrapped his dual nationality?

Apple's customer service featured on Watchdog a couple of weeks ago; they've been apparently trying to charge people who want a discounted battery replacement for other non-existent issues. And unless they fix those non-existent issues (such as a microphone) then they'll refuse to change the battery.

No idea as he moved to the UK when he was a child so I'm unsure how they'd get his banking details and how the idea of paying US tax while in another country works.
I'm thinking you must have started working in the US so then have a tax code as they then can trace you via that but I could be 100% wrong on that.

They also had the "accidental" update that flagged 3rd party replaced screens as not genuine and locked the phone with an error code recently too.

Yes. He was faced with some pretty large tax bills and so decided to renounce his US citizenship.

Older Toshiba and IBM models do but IBM is now built by Lenovo.

Dell and Sony are OK but the best all arounder is Asus.

The correct answer however is no, there are no reliable laptop brands because laptops suck. They're unreliable by their very nature.

To be fair, besides a litany of software issues my iPad 2 has had the least problems. All the hardware still works despite it being from 2011. I'm using it now, it's slow and apps crash all the time and other gooseberry fool but it still turns on and the fundamental input and output, processing and storage have no problems.

I've never had an issue with any of the Lenovo laptops I have had to use for work or at home over the past 10 years. They are ugly as sin but never had a part fail on me.

I think the whole Apple update that slows down the Iphone is one of the most disgusting anti consumer practices I have ever heard performed by a company of that size. I can't believe they have got away with it too.

Yeah, I found that deplorable, there is no reason whatsoever why they can't offer users the choice of how to improve battery longevity if that was even a real issue (which in many cases it certainly wouldn't be if the device was only used to a certain pattern or not very often that naturally extends battery life of li ion batteries).

We use HP laptops at work and never have an issue with them.
The designers who use Macbooks are always having to get them repaired/swapped out though.

Yeha HP laptops are very solid have been for a while now.

My one at the NHS was epic especially considering the amount of vms and stuff I'd run on it, it was a normal ultrabook nothing particularly special. Current one where I am now seems to be the same they can take a right beating in load and bringing in bags and things

My 11 year old ASUS laptop is a tank but still works and it’s obviously slow as strawberry float now.

I’ve had two Dells, first one had a faulty hard drive and the second one’s motherboard died.

Never had a problem with my MacBook Air.
