With the new pencil that adds a bit more money, so I don't think I can justify buying the Apple keyboard/cover. Anyone use any third party keyboards or cases that they can recommend?

Also, what's the best way to connect a USB or external HDD? I hear that's a new feature?

Maybe consider this?

Cheers. Very good price, but I don't live in the UK. I might have a browse for the older model though as that's pretty much half the price of the new one! Just need to see if it can handle Affinity software OK. I had a play with the old pencil in the shop and it worked nicely, but obviously doesn't magnetic charge which is a bummer.

I assume Apple doesn't neglect older models much, ie updates and all that?

You'll probably get 4-5 years of iOS updates until Apple stop supporting the device with new OS updates. And even then, third party apps are still supported and get updates unless the developer stops supporting whatever version of iOS you're using. I still use my iPad 4 from 2012.

Looking at the list of supported devices for iOS 13, the oldest supported is the iPad Air 2 from 2014.

That's good to know. Sadly I can't find many good prices for Germany. Normally I'd be fine getting the UK one, but I'm not going to be back there until October and I want some time to get used to it before travelling.

Sorry for dumb questions, but one thing I'm not really getting is icloud and storage. In my mind 64GB is fine, as I wouldn't be storing movies and music on there. However when I've searched specifically on forums about designer apps there seems to be a lot of contradicting info.

I assumed I'd be able to create my work, and if I didn't want to have it on my device I could either transfer it to a thumb drive or upload it over cloud? This in turn removes the files on the actual device. But people seem to be suggesting it still keeps files stored? Or are saying its way better to have the 64gb version. I don't see why if I can store files externally? Am I missing something?

They release updates for older models all the time. How else would they slow them down.

I would be stunned if they didn't let you store files externally to the device. Not even Apple could be that evil.

I've been looking at the new 12.9" Pro too - from what I can tell it's currently not that easy to move files off it (cloud or email seem to be the main options) but an update to iOS specifically for ipads (iPadOS) is coming later in the year that finally allows for external storage.

I'm not sure it'll remove files from the device when you upload to the cloud, I think it's more of a backup.

BUT - delete from the device and it'll also delete from the cloud. It just doesn't make sense that it works like that.

Like you, I'm picking this up from reviews and youtube info, so don't take what I've written as definite....

I ended up ordering the 12.9 256GB one with the pencil. It was only about €100 more than the 64GB. Sounds like new OS will be very useful, but at least I can now whack a bunch of films and TV shows on the device and do video editing without fearing running out of space. God knows how much space photoshop will take up in the future either.

Sadly Amazon Germany is gooseberry fool, so even with Prime I now have to wait until Monday

Sounds good - I was looking at the 256Gb too. The pricing is a bit screwy here in the UK and the silver models seem to be heavily discounted compared to the Space grey, which is the one I prefer... The 512Gb silver is only £30 more than the 256Gb Space grey.

I'm hoping this is going to last me a good 5 years+ so want to get the best spec I can - buy once, get it right!

Amongst other things, I am really looking forward to having all my sheet music/compositions in one place, rather than on floating bits of paper/post-its. The 12.9" seems to be as close to a full size sheet of paper as I'm going to get. Even the 11 inch was giving me eye strain when I tested it with sheet music in the store.

Ah well, not quite ready to buy yet anyway due to funds not available... :(

Apple's USB cables are the complete gooseberry fools. I looked this morning and somehow it's suddenly ended up like this:

Image

No other black cable I've ever used degrades to that extent.

That Apple still hasn't worked out how to make cables genuinely astounds me!

Back when I had apple stuff (:dread:) this gooseberry fool used to happen all the time. For the lightning connectors I used to buy third party ends for a few pounds and put them on the end of decent non apple cables.

Had Apple stuff for years and that's never happened to me.

Conversely I don't think I've owned a single 30-pin or lightning cable from Apple that hasn't done this. :dread:

Of the hundreds of other brand USB cables I've owned I think it has happened to one of them!

No idea what people do to get them in such a state  I don't really use a cable anymore now anyway since I got a wireless charger. I usually keep one in my bag for college just in case but I've got an XS Max and I can easily get a full day out of it, sometimes more, without needing to charge.
