Great. The mfi thing seemed dumb as hell to me. Really coming around to this iPad Air I spent a large amount of this months salary on. Battery life is insane. Using it all day at work to study ccna ebooks - 7 and a half hours screen on time with 47% left.

Product recall:

Apple is recalling some of its 15in MacBook Pro laptops over a battery fire risk.

The company said on Thursday that a limited number of its largest laptop line, sold between September 2015 and February 2017, contained batteries that “may overheat and pose a safety risk”.

Apple asked customers with MacBook Pro (Retina, 15in, Mid 2015) laptops to stop using the machines immediately and to seek to have the battery replaced as soon as possible, which would be done free as part of the recall. It said the service may take one to two weeks.

The company said anyone with the model, which cost upwards of £1,599, should cross-check the serial number of the machine on the Apple recall site. The serial number could be found by clicking on the Apple menu in the top left corner of the screen and choosing “About this Mac”.

“Customer safety is always Apple’s top priority, and we have voluntarily decided to replace affected batteries, free of charge,” Apple said in a statement.

Sir Jony Ive, the Briton who over two decades helped turn Apple into the world's most valuable company, is leaving to set up his own venture.

Mr Ive, designer of the Mac, iPod and iPhone, leaves later this year to start a creative business called LoveFrom, with Apple as its first client.

He said: "This just seems like a natural and gentle time to make this change."

Apple boss Tim Cook said he looked forward to continuing to work with him

More Apple related problems, this one with the new MacBook Air (again):

Apple finds issue w/ logic board in some 2018 MacBook Airs, offers free repair

Apple has confirmed in an internal document to repair staff that it’s identified an issue with the main logic board in what it says is a “very small number” of MacBook Air models. Apple Stores and authorized repair staff have been informed to replace the main logic board in affected machines at no cost to customers, according to the document obtained by 9to5Mac

Apple’s memo to repair staff notes that it has identified “an issue” with the main logic board specifically in Retina, 13-inch, 2018 MacBook Air models with certain serial numbers. Apple will be emailing customers with machines with the serial numbers they’ve identified as being affected, otherwise customers can take their machine to Apple Stores or authorized repair staff to have their devices checked out.

Apple’s documents list symptoms as issues with “power,” but do not elaborate on what problems users are experiencing exactly. A quick search online for problems with the 2018 MacBook Air logic board shows reports back to when the device first launched with some users’ machines not able to power on at all.

Apple has not yet publicly announced the program or listed it on its “Exchange and Repair Extension Programs” webpage where it lists recall and service programs. In some cases Apple doesn’t list programs that only affect a small number of devices, but it’s not clear what criteria it uses to decide to publicly announce a repair or recall program.

For affected machines, Apple will offer the program for four years from the original purchase date. Users that think they might be experiencing the issue can take their MacBook Air to Apple Stores or an Apple authorized service provider..

If the keyboard doesn’t get you, maybe this fault will.

Here’s hoping for some descent improvements for the upgraded Air rumoured to be coming in a few months (said to be completely new keyboard, faster processor, better graphics).

A question for any Ipad Pro owners out there. I'm going away for 6 months and need a portable device. I currently only have a desktop and use it for illustration/design work with Adobe (old version as I've avoided paying a subscription :x ).

Normally I'd look into getting a laptop, but I like the look of designing directly onto the device screen, as it will be nice drawing wherever I want. I've been looking at the Surface Pro as I know I can get Adobe CC on it, however I'm a little skeptical, especially as I think they don't do worldwide cover.

The Ipad Pro looks great, especially apps like Procreate. I've only owned one Apple product in my life (about 10 years ago), so not sure what I can do with the Ipad. I will be wanting to do design work, and see that there is software such as Affinity Designer which will kind of be a replacement for Illustrator whilst away. Has anyone got any experience with these kind of applications, or used them for client work?

I also fancy doing some work for my gf's website, so potentially photo editing, making images the correct size etc for websites, possibly video editing and all that. Anyone done any of these with Ipad?

I guess another option would be get a laptop and the Ipad mini...

Cheers.

Why not get a surface and out the same version of adobe stuff you have now on it.

The surface pen is awesome and you can keyboard / mouse / drawing pad like you normally do. It means you get near enough the experience you are used to but mobile.

I have an old disc version of the Adobe packages, so not actually sure I can get them anymore as a digital file. Otherwise I'd then be paying monthly which I don't really wanna do. The software on the ipad is infinitely cheaper and supposed to be very good.

Cant you just buy a usb dvd drive and install?

I cant comment on the ipad but have a surface pro and can recommend them wholly. although not used it for graphic design. With a blue tooth keyboard and mouse its as good as any pc ive used for work stuff.

That's interesting, I hadn't even thought of that. I'll have to double check with Adobe that I can still register such old software onto a new computer though. Cheers.

The Surface would probably make for a better computer for 6 months away, if you really wanted an iPad though the standard iPad (from 2018 onwards) can use the Apple Pencil, I’m not a heavy art user at all but Procreate seems to perform pretty well on it, never deleted too far into dozens of layers and the like though, so if you didn’t want to spend the extra money on a Pro you can still get a similar experience on the standard iPad.

Aye, I've got a bit of time to look into it before leaving. I had a look and CS6 doesn't seem to work that great on the Surface Pro. It works, but a few issues and lag.

I hadn't even thought about the Ipad but I always see videos of people creating really great stuff on them. I'd have to obviously learn new software etc and get used to how Ipads work. Both look like very cool peices of kit though, just a tad expensive.

Are Apple products still mostly reliable? I'd worry about getting a blue screen abroad on a Windows tablet.

The iPads are perfectly fine. The full version of Photoshop is coming out for them but they haven't announced a date.

Never had a problem with either of the iPads I’ve owned, not sure if it’s still an issue now but when the latest Pro models came out there were reports of some owners iPads have a slight bend in them, would have thought this would have been rectified by now though.

Had a play on some Ipads for about an hour today in the Apple shop and think I'm gonna go for the 64GB 12.9" Pro. I think that should be enough, especially if I save to the Cloud. With the new pencil that adds a bit more money, so I don't think I can justify buying the Apple keyboard/cover. Anyone use any third party keyboards or cases that they can recommend?

Also, what's the best way to connect a USB or external HDD? I hear that's a new feature?

Nah, get the new version. If you’re planning on using the pencil you’ll want to be able to magnetically charge it on the side of the iPad.
As it stands, connecting external storage doesn’t work in iOS12, but later in the year iOS13 will support it.
You can just connect a regular usb stick or drive to the iPad with usb-c. So you made need an adapter. The files will be accessible in the Files app.

Cheers. Very good price, but I don't live in the UK. I might have a browse for the older model though as that's pretty much half the price of the new one! Just need to see if it can handle Affinity software OK. I had a play with the old pencil in the shop and it worked nicely, but obviously doesn't magnetic charge which is a bummer.

I assume Apple doesn't neglect older models much, ie updates and all that?
