For Apple reportedly non-volatile memory costs 5-6x as much as it does for anyone else despite them being the richest and most powerful consumer electronics company in the universe, so have no buying power whatsoever.
Even Apple themselves can’t escape the premium price then!
Seriously there might be semiconductor shortages given just how much of the market is willing to give it up to Apple.
But Apple's model is:
Premium look & feel
Above average performance
Lock-in
Marketing x100 on small incremental improvements for functionally identical products
Inflate the price as much as possible while keeping production cost minimal
The idea Apple make as much money as they do purely from making good products is, well, not really true. The memory thing has always bugged me too.
Nintendo do it as well because Iwata was a big fan of Apple's model while probably being less of an arsehole than Jobs.
