God I love that game

Picky bastard.

To be fair the emulator I used for it doesn't have a lot of setting that you can change. There may be some within the actual game cabinet settings, but I'd have to check.

I have to admit that I never really got on with Daytona USA, I've only ever played the Saturn port and wasn't overly impressed with it. The graphics weren't great, the 'pop-in' was distracting and the handling was poor at best (I also didn't know about drifting so couldn't ever actually finish a race on the 3rd course).

I think a lot of arcade racers at the time just weren't suited to console ports, mainly because there was so little content in them, Daytona had three courses and two cars, which for a £35-40 game didn't offer much value for money - this didn't matter in the arcades as it was a quid (or two) a go and you'd only play for a few minutes so didn't get bored.

Digital Foundry did a good break down of the Daytona USA games. The Model 2 board was technically so far ahead of everything else there was never a chance of it getting a decent port. There were multiple versions for the Saturn. Basically there wasn't anything near an arcade perfect port until around 2011 if I remember rightly when they made a version for 360 and PS3.

Another good video i found as well.

Didn't one of the later Saturn Daytona games use the shading technique Virtua Fighter Remix used to make the low poly graphics look smoother (Garoud shading?), I remember playing it a friends houseand thinking it looked far better.

Quite possibly. Certainly the 2nd version of Daytona on the Saturn both looked and ran better than the original port. Mostly down to them being more familiar with the hardware.

The aesthetic of the original article arcade game was never topped in any subsequent version imo. They all messed with the car shape and colours too much - look at the dreamcast version for example :dread:

Didn't enjoy the sequel at all and 3 looks like mobile game.

Original daytona

Needless to say I'm in love with the ps3 version. Wish they'd bring it to pc ps4.

I have an encyclopaedic love of racing games but grew up in the middle of nowhere so never got to experience Daytona in its native environment. As such I have no nostalgia for it, so when I tried the PS3 version I didn't rate it that highly, plus I think I'm more of an Outrun guy; more Ferraris, lots more different environments.

Its nice to see Arcade Attacks back and you do a better job than I could, however there are still a few pauses between sections which go on a bit longer than I was expecting, you finish talking and I'm there waiting for the next sentence but it doesn't start quite when it would be natural to.

Thanks to Hypes and TWA for joining me on the stream. Was fun to stream something other than Mario Maker for a change.

EDIT: Stream itself starts about 9 minutes in.

Just caught up on the video... nice show, Cheeky! I've not played Daytona and it looks to be good fun. I enjoyed the "Jeffrey" Easter egg  :toot: .

I think I do have a digi copy of the game for the Xbox 360... I recall getting it cheap in a sale but I've not actually played it. Sometime I will have a Sega Rally / Daytona USA session on the classic 360 :toot: .

Dev, I enjoyed both the "lookback" vid and your "live play" vid. Personally I like your laid back, "slow talking" style of presentation... it's almost like an antidote for the fast-talking, crazed style of most videos on YouTube :) .

I've got two ideas for expanding your concept but I fear they may be a little too demanding in terms of time and resources.

1) Alongside your analysis of the arcade game, you could also take a look at the home computer / console conversions?
2) To build up interest in your study of the game, perhaps you could devise some sort of "high score" challenge so that other GRcadians could tackle the game and try to beat your own score / progress?

If these suggestions are a bit too onerous, maybe you could consider them as "special" events just for now and again?

Anyhow... great work, dude.

Thanks Jawa.

1) I'm deliberately staying away from any console/computer conversions. The focus is on the arcade games themselves. That's not to say I won't ever do it. I mention console conversions from time to time when they're relevant. But for the most part I'm not really interested in them.
2) I'm not really sure how that would work, or what it would even entail. I'm not against the idea of doing something, but it's not really what I'm interested in at this point. If someone comes up with a good idea then let me know.

Time is really a factor here. I don't have as much time as I did on the last few runs, simply because I'm busier than I was. It's one of the reasons I've gone for a fortnightly release schedule, so taking on anymore isn't really something I can do just now. We'll see how it goes though.

Where are you playing the arcades? Is it all through Mame or something?

Emulators yeah. Mostly MAME but I have a couple of others that I use for more demanding stuff like Demule for DC/Naomi games and M2 for Model 2 games (Daytona, Sega Rally, Virtua Cop etc). Mame doesn't use 3D acceleration and they're going for accuracy of emulation over speed, so some games run quite poorly on my system. Means you need an emulator that's going for speed and playability over accuracy.
