I actually think this was quite a good spin on it because (MCU spoilers):The blip still had reworld impact and consequences. People didn't die but they did lose 5 years and that has had an impact on the world in various forms.

if it wasnt for the five year jump it wouldnt have had any impact

Well yeah, obviously?

If none of them had superpowers then they wouldn't have eventually won.

I think dragon ball is a good example of both how resurrections can work and when they can ruin the narrative stakes. The dragon balls being used to revive people is done for the first time in the third major arc of dragon ball, and it's a novel idea at the time because it sets up stakes for goku's quest to collect the dragon balls; something that at this point in the story he might not even be able to do because his enemies are presented as invincible. Of course goku is successful and revives bora, which is a great relief after a very long arc where the character lies dead and great trials have been undertaken to revive him.

This sets up for two arcs later, where someone important to goku is killed. The expectation is that he can be revived after the dragon balls are collected again, but this time the arc's villain takes away that ability completely leaving both the other characters hopeless. After this arc and the restoration of the dragon balls, there's nothing else to be done with them and so the series cycles between regurgitating variations of the first and second plot points until eventually they just become a way to erase any and all narrative stakes.

I was thinking of Dragon Ball too, funnily enough.

Having been the biggest big bad of OG Dragon Ball, Piccolo's heel-face turn in the Saiyan saga which ultimately lead to him sacrificing his life for Gohan was supposed to carry a lot of emotional weight, because his death meant that the dragon balls would cease to exist, and everyone who died in the fight was gone for good.

That is, until they go to Namek and just wish everyone back with their dragon balls instead. :|

Yeah, that saga's basically the beginning of the end for anything mattering in dragon ball. That being said I think the set up for the characters going to namek and piccolo getting wished back there is pretty cool.

then the dragon balls disappear again halfway through the next arc and are restored well before the arc even ends
