So watching the Madeline McCann Netflix documentary and Kate McCann says hardly anyone is critical of them as parents, I am so wondered how the rest of you felt.

If they killed their child and covered it up - then they're bad parents.
If they didn't kill their child - probably not bad parents.

I would be surprised if someone felt that labelling the parents of the abducted child as "bad" was a thing they wanted to do.

Their child was kidnapped and sold to sex trafficers while they got drunk in some bar.

So maybe.

Based on my understanding of the facts around Madeline's disappearance (I've watched some of the recent documentary and paid a fair amount of attention to the story at the time, but I'm not claiming to be an expert!) I would say that, on balance, yes they were "bad parents", as were the other couples who were on holiday with them.

They left their children unattended a considerable distance away from them, in an unlocked apartment, that they had limited/no visibility of, in a place that was unfamiliar to everyone, in order to go for a meal with their friends. Personally I think that is showing a lack of care for the children who are their responsibility.

Now I'm sure millions of people have done similar things - leaving kids in cars unattended, nipping across the road to grab something from a neighbour or shop whilst your kids are still in your house etc. and how often does anything bad happen in those cases? Probably very few times, but that doesn't necessarily validate that behaviour as "OK", it just means in those cases people have been lucky and gotten away without an incident occurring.

They left their kids unattended while they went to a bar. They're strawberry floating AWFUL parents, and if they hadn't been rich and white, they've have been jailed, or at the very least, had their remaining children taken off them and been pilloried in the press.

That's exactly how I feel

Has this been alluded to anywhere in the press or in that Netflix documentary? I was reading a Twitter thread about it and it just makes the pair out to be even dodgier than they were before, if that was even possible.

I haven’t seen the Netflix documentary but from what I remember of the case they left their very young kids alone while they went out eating and drinking.

It’s not exactly great parenting.

I tend to think that they made a bad decision rather than that they are bad parents in general.

Now, I haven't seen the Netflix programme and so I don't know if evidence was presented that confirmed whether the parents regularly did things that made them worthy of the label "bad parents" or if this incident was a one-off. Either way, the outcome is truly dreadful and, personally, I wouldn't feel comfortable placing such a label on people in that situation.

Assuming that they didn't kill her or conspire to have her kidnapped...

... then I agree with Jawa's stance.

Of course, if they're guilty then ship them off to Monster Island.

Regardless of whether or not they killed her, they thought it was acceptable to leave a child alone in a hotel room while they went out for a meal and drinks. That makes them bad parents.

I would agree if they had turned their back for a few seconds and the kid had run off. Or if they had paid for a babysitter who had run off with the kid. Or if Madeline had been 8/9/10 years old.

But this is more than just a bad decision, they left three very young children in an apartment and then went out for food and drinks. That’s a little beyond a bad mistake, it is negligent.

That doesn’t mean I think they deserved it, nobody deserves to lose a child, but they are definitely at fault for what happened.

Three children were left alone. That’s why it’s highly suspicious, and I feel that the parents may have accidentally killed their daughter.

I haven't watched the programme and so I'm not aware if any evidence was shown that may change my thinking, but I don't think I'd want to go further than saying they made a misjudgement. It was a poor decision but, yeah, no-one would have expected or wanted the outcome that resulted. It's so sad.
