I started ordering takeaway of my own accord and semi-regularly when I started uni last year. Before that I would have takeaway like twice a year at most, if that.

I have like one or two a month on average and they always end up being disappointing lmao
I've been through times where I would order like strawberry floatin three a week cuz it'd be too much bother to cook while I was stoned, and I was stoned everyday lol

Only recently discovered that my local pizza place is half price for NHS staff. God help me. :dread:

Yeah they are still treats for us, don’t have them that often, so when we’ve not had time to cook anything we’ll get a take away and it feels like a treat.

Got a Dominos tonight. Only managed half a medium with the rest in the fridge for tomorrow.

If pizza was better cold it would be served that way in the first place. :fp:

Cold pizza is gooseberry fool.

We have takeaway a couple of times a week (we had one today) and it’s always disappointing and never really enjoy it, we having been trying different places but none are great, so no I wouldn’t say they are a treat

Takeaways are certainly a treat and anyone who considers that a regular, tokenistic, normal expenditure is pretty vain in my opinion, including those who cook - sure takeaways aren't even that good a lot of the time unless you have a good local place so it's a luxury, no other way about it - you're literally paying for someone else to cook for you and put it in a bunch of plastic to microwave in 5 mins or not even that so not sure how else it could be considered than the epitome of fulfilling one's most basic life function automatically.

Why on earth do you order them then?

I'm not saying it's wrong, perhaps tokenstic is harsh - for many people it is, "oh good we got a takeaway last night!" (well done you) - just not justifiable within the context of frugal means.

Unless the topic is more in line with "are takeaways just normal and gooseberry fool?" in which case the answer would probably be, yes. I'd get 1 good takeaway a year rather than 3 gooseberry fool takeaways a week. That would baffle me as well as make me ill. But it seems clear to me far too any indulge in takeaways than any poor person would entertain as a normal expense. I'd rather go to a restaurant as well because you can often get away with the service charge for small parties and at least then you gain some kind of experience besides added rubbish and, er, tastier TV viewing.

The max I will spend on a takeaway about once every 3 months is a pad thai which costs just £7 and is really good and filling.

Takeaways are definitely not a good way to spend money. They are to some extent undeniably decadent and frivolous and I can't justify having them so often except to say that to me it's just a fun way to relax and have some nice-tasting food - I'll buck the trend and say my local takeaways are in fact not rubbish! - without stressing about cooking or washing up.

I feel like other people might go to the pub for a few drinks to scratch a similar itch but that's not really our thing, y'know?

But yeah, if our budgets were (even a little bit) tighter we'd have to cut it out, obviously!

We have takeaways if we get in late or have been busy all day, my partner does not like eating in restaurants (I do and go on my own quite often or with a friend) I would say the average price we pay for both of us is around £25 with a bottle of pop, it’s not that they are disgusting and I waste very little if anything but they just don’t taste as good as I feel they should or could, I would rather pay double and enjoy it but none around here hit the mark

I can understand that balancing of budgets in a similar way as I buy a game for £3 on sale and play that for an hour or two and then maybe not play it for months (or ever again) because it's the same as a pint I would otherwise spend if I had a social life  (having said that I did go to a LAN party this weekend and got a Dominos - which are gooseberry fool btw, group order).

That's cool and all and I can appreciate the restaurant part and still wanting restaurant quality food as I have a brain disorder that makes overstimulation difficult... I'd spend £25 on a takeaway for me and my mum with food to spare once in a blue moon.

Maybe I don't have enough friends to group order (was around a mate's last spring :shifty: and they did order a takeaway because the strawberry floating entire lamb leg was to fatty to eat - I took it home), or perhaps our habits will change, but being on a super low income for a really long time I've definitely had to say "nope, not happening" to the mere fleeting thought of a takeaway unless I've just made a big sale or birthday money or something. As a regular thing that just aint happening, so for me the answer to the question is absolutely yes it's a treat and I was also raised that way. It's become a cultural thing to have takeaways really often and some people do boast about it so.. It's ironic that I think the boast of "we had a great takeaway on Sunday y'know mate lol lads/la famalia" etc. was surely based in the "treat" or "magnificence" even of a tasty unusual/foreign delicacy and now it's more and more popular because of the rate of people's working lifestyles, gym etc that isn't really the case anymore, as it's just filling a gap that would be filled with a regular meal like... rice (that's about 40% of my diet)

Is takeaways something people generally do in groups now where if you split it, it might be somewhat economical? Not the best chinese on the block but noodles and stuff.

Sometimes I go to the local Chinese and get take out. There use to be a really nice Indian takeaway nearby as well but last time I ordered it was awful. Occasionally I get a Domino's but I've been trying to lose weight and save money so I'm really cutting down ATM
