I've got a couple of ideas for what to make the guidelines for this. One option is a bit more straight forward and "conventional" but should make it easy for people to create something on the theme, whereas the other is slightly more abstract and potentially challenging but I feel like it would give more scope for interesting creations...

Decisions, decisions!

You could always offer both and let people pick?

You could set it up as two seperate categories and then people could also choose to do both if they want to. It'll be bit of extra work but I'm happy to sign you up for it

Yep good shout, it's just a festive fun event so why not give people the option of picking one (or both) to tackle!

If anyone has an objection let me know, if people are up for having both in play I might release the guidelines earlier so there is more time to play with them :D

I'd prefer more than week of making time anyway if possible!

Who's ready for some festive AYAMMM guidelines?!

Nobody? Well you're getting them anyway! :capnscotty:

Option 1 Guidelines
Image

Ice. Ice never changes.

Except when it melts.

Or cracks.

Or gets churned around in one of those things that makes slush puppies...

But as far as Mario is concerned it never changes! It's a slippery winter customer ready to take Mario's best laid platforming plans and leave him either sliding off a cliff or flat on his arse! :toot:

Your challenge for this set of guidelines is to create a fast paced slippery slide style Mario course - think bobsleigh courses, think ski slopes and jumps, think about sledging down hills at Christmas time ... think about that bit from Mario 64 where I clearly got this idea from!

It should go without saying, but for the sake of clarity: for this round you must use the Snow Theme! :D

It doesn't have to be a constant down hill race, there can be ups and downs, you can have traditional platforming and other elements like puzzles mixed in there too, but the overall feel we want is that of an an icy thrill ride! :toot:

Option 2 Guidelines

[authentic Brooklyn accent]
"Hi, Bob Hoskin's here, now you boys has gots a helluva job on here. You gots ta bring the worlds of Mario and Christmas Movies together in a way that doesn't make my brain turn to cheese, capiche?

Now get on with it, lizard breath! :capnscotty:
[/authentic Brooklyn accent]

That's right folks, it's time to do the unthinkable and combine everyone's favourite plumber with the silver screen, but this time there won't be any bona fide A list celebrities like John Leguizamo to save the day.

The concept is simple - use Mario Maker to in some way channel, recreate or pay homage to that most well loved of holiday traditions - the Christmas Movie! This could be building a level to make the player feel like they are visiting a location from a movie, perhaps attempting to recreate a famous scene or moment from it, or in some other way make the player feel like they have experienced something of that movie during their play time - the choice is yours!

Submission deadline is 8pm Sunday 5th of December - send your level names and codes to me via PM.
- Do not post the level in the thread or otherwise share it with anyone beforehand.

So there we have it, two sets of guidelines to choose from. As discussed before you can attempt one or both of these guidelines, it's up to you. Ranking will be interesting depending on what the uptake is across the two sets but it's all just for fun so we'll work it out either way! :D

Overall just remember to build something fun and festive - I want to step into these levels and feel no less joy and excitement than Nintendo 64 kid on Christmas morning:

No pressure ;)

Ice-based platforming...

As for that second guideline, hope you're prepared for seven Die Hard levels. No idea what other Christmas film we could base a level on.

Any film that released in December, has ever been on the TV in December, or mentions Christmas even in passing is a Christmas film, right?

I'm leaving it at the Maker's discretion to determine what constitutes a Christmas movie.

And I would have zero issues with playing 7 iterations of the Nakatomi plaza!

 I'm almost certainly doing Die Hard because I don't actually like any other Christmas films. We'll see though, I'll mull(ed wine) it over.

Was going to say the same thing

Themes are great, already thinking about what to do now - I think I will avoid Die Hard, anyway!

Yeah, I've got ideas for what Christmas films to consider that are not Die Hard. Might try for something not conventional.

Wasn't expecting to return to this!

:toot:

That's easily the most played level I've made. Proof that endless 1-1 remakes are the way forward!

Wow, impressive stats! :toot:

Cloying nostalgia will always bring in the crowds, you're just following the Nintendo playbook! ;)

EDIT: That sounds harsher than it was meant to be - it's a great level!

I have actually been very busy over the last week (the new variant... :( ) so I haven't done anything yet. I will make sure there is something from me for Jenuall to play next week though!
