PostAre you a... GRcade representative at The Mafia Championship?

Not a new game, but an invitation to one from Thingyman. In his own words...

Thingyman wrote:I'm hosting a very big Mafia (the "Are You A...?" game you play here sometimes) Championship tournament, featuring 187 different communities, and would like to extend an invitation to your community.

The Mafia Championship is a super fun event that's been running since 2013. Over the years, 270+ communities, 50+ nationalities and 600+ representatives have participated. More importantly, it has created strong bonds between communities, resulted in countless friendships, and it has even led to people getting married, believe it or not :)

The concept, to explain it very briefly, is that each community elects one person to go represent them in the Championship. I'd be stoked to see you guys represented, so if this invitation intrigues you, feel very free to share it with your fellow community members or run it by the appropriate persons.

So, would anyone here be interested in taking part? Sounds like it could be lots of fun, only it does require quite a time commitment. My own quick summary from the invite:

Summary wrote:Your representative should be prepared for having to read upwards of 600 posts per 24 hours during the early stages of the game. Additionally, there’s a requirement that each player must make at least 10 posts per Game Day. Only active players should apply/participate.

Individual winners in each game are voted for at the end by the players.

You'll play one qualifier. Should you win, you'll also play in the final. Runners up (and some select wildcards) will play an additional wildcard game for a chance to reach the final.

The overall winner gets a certificate signed by Dmitry Davidoff, the creator of mafia.

If we have multiple people wanting to take part we'll figure out some way of picking a single representative.

How easily can you do an "international" mafia style game - surely various elements need to happen at set times during the day so some people will be asleep?

I wonder the same too, I guess you can't rely on people being around to switch votes as the end of day nears, so have to be aware of that when playing. They do have automated hosting so a bot that counts votes and posts results etc. so I guess that helps.

I would absolutely play but time, I think, would be too great a barrier. I can keep up with the games on here but 10 posts minimum per day from 60+ people I think is not something I could commit to. I'd definitely back myself though.

Edit: Having read the Google doc, seems like every single player has a special role, including werewolves on top of their normal wolf role. So you could have a wolf-doctor that could heal itself. :dread:

One man should not have this much power in this game. Luckily I'm not an ordinary man.

Excellent question.

Because so many different communities are playing, and only 17 players are playing in each game, you will get the chance to fill out a survey and tell me your preferences.

I will then place you into a game that suits your preferences. I.e. if you want 36 hour day phases/12 hour night phases with deadlines ending at around 8-9 PM EST, then you got it. If you want Euro friendly deadlines, you can have that too.

How do you have time to administer this? It sounds like a full time job.

It's only 17 players in each game.

The games are indeed quite active though. In the early stages of the game, you should expect around 500 posts per 24 hours. Not all can do it, but it's definitely doable, unless you can only rarely be at your computer or on your phone, of course :)

Without exaggerating in the least, it is a full-time job. What I am doing right now here, I am doing for 200+ communities. 50+ of which will end up not being able to send someone anyway :P

But it's worth it. Like the invitation says, it has even resulted in numerous romantic relationships, including marriages, not to mention tons and tons of friendships. It has also helped dying mafia communities get back to their former glory days, etc. And it's a way for players and communities to learn from each other.

Instead of being 200+ separate communities, we're now a little closer to each other :)

I'm a huge fan of the game and would like for everyone in the world to know it.

I would be interested but for the time commitment, but I'm sure someone here will be able to take part.

OK. Roughly speaking, how long does a normal game tend to last?

Can’t wait for StayDeads international competition meltdown.
