There was a time when I'd only sign up for games like these if I knew I'd be able to devote sufficient time and attention to the game, goings-on, the progression of the thread, etc. Now I just sign up regardless. I figure if I'm only slightly involved and play badly, it's an opportunity for someone else to play greatly and expose me for the clueless dumbass I am. If I'm inactive, at least an active player isn't getting culled or targeted instead of me. And if I am active and play well: well, that's good too!

I'm genuinely curious, what on Earth is everyone doing that makes them so busy all the time? I work full time in a busy job, generally 7-7 at the moment and with a team to manage, so I can't just skive off; I have two needy children, a 3.5 year old and a 3 month old; a needy wife (and not in the good way) who apparently doesn't like it if I spend all evening on my phone ignoring her; I play PlayStation with one group of mates every Thursday and a different set on Saturday; and I have a Zoom call with my parents every Monday evening. All in all, I would consider myself pretty bloody busy but compared to you lot I must be living the life of Riley!
