Semi-Final Guidelines
Image

So for our explosive semi-final I want to see you do fun and interesting things with Bob-ombs. What you do is up to yourself, but they must play an integral part of your level.

There are no restrictions on anything else, but I want to see the cute little bastards exploding all over the place!

Remember, the two winners this week will be going through to our Grand Final, so get your thinking caps on!

You have until 8pm Sunday 19th of July to get your submissions into me.

Good luck all!

Nice! Already really looking forward to seeing the other levels. Loads of scope for creativity with this theme.

Get ready for bomb ladders and other kaizo bob-omb tricks!
(... I'm pretty sure that would amount to a forfeit).

Interesting. Can't wait to see what everyone comes up with, I've already got a few explosive ideas!

Spent Monday night and Tuesday night trying loads of ideas and having none of them hold together, but finally think I've cracked it tonight :toot: Still most of the level to make but I'm at least happy with the concept now!

Think this is the most trouble I've had with a theme so far, I've used bob-ombs loads before but never as the primary element in the level and for some reason that really threw me  I reckon there is loads of scope for different uses though so seeing the rest of the levels will be interesting for sure!

Related: I only just found out you can apply music or sound effects to Mario in the editor and they will carry over to the level! You can make the baby noise happen every time you crouch :dread:

Struggling with both time and inspiration this week. Had a few ideas initially but they didn't work out so I'm kind of hoping something comes together at the 11th hour now! :dread:

Got the start of something that I'm beginning to like the feel of now which is a relief! It needs some work still and there's a section which I think might cause some stress on stream which I may yet remove or tweak for difficulty :shifty: it involves using bombs in a combination with a certain gizmo configuration to gain height, not sure if this is what OSC is referring to with the mention of "bomb ladders" as that's not a term I'm familiar with!

Is it a stack of sideways springs?

Maybe... :slol:

Damn, hadn’t realised it was a “thing”. Just goes to show that chances are anything you come up with has been done before by someone else!

Think I'm largely done with my level now, just fiddling with it now and adjusting things but not foreseeing any major changes at this point. I'm probably at that stage where I should just leave it alone in all honesty!

Just played through them and all three are great, it's going to be close I think!

Set a relatively decent (?) record on Jenuall's level, but using the bomb ladder skip (which I appreciated!) so I'm sure it can be beaten by anyone actually capable of those

EDIT: Just thinking about it I think I've realised another skip that should shave a good chunk of time off, so time to replay! Or not

Just re-watched the stream as I wasn't able to catch all of it first time through. Thought all the other levels were great and I loved how each of them reflected the creator's own style!

I'm going to find it very difficult to rank them, I'll be giving them all multiple run-throughs to try to figure out where I stand on them I think!

Agreed, I'm definitely going to try and give each creation a good few plays before trying to nail down a ranking!

Your time looks pretty solid on my level OR, I hadn't really planned it out with speed in mind but there are definitely some skips and optimisations you can make once you know what's coming!

I actually relied on one skip to get through it (other than the deliberate bomb ladder alternative). Just before yoshi where you have to set up bombs on tracks between saws to jump red-blue-red you can jump straight to blue and then the ground, avoiding that timing entirely (I kept reaching the first red before the switch would trigger!). Doing that means the switch is already set to red for the next puzzle too :toot:

The timing of a jump with an explosion was my stumbling point in Karl's too, but I got that with some perserverance! I should try for a better time there too

I agonised over some of the bomb jump timings for a long period, it was hard to find a balance between being achievable and still providing sufficient challenge!
