Still got a few of this week's to play but already I can tell it's going to be a tough round to rank. So many interesting ideas and lots of levels that excel at different things!

Stream will be delayed while I resolve some issues with my capture card.

I'll post as soon as I'm ready to go live.

Hey, I just caught the end of the stream. Totally deserve the 0 points, I'm so sorry for forgetting to vote, I'm really embarrassed! I did try to submit way after the deadline but I think Devlin was already setting up the stream so it's 100% fair enough. (EDIT: Missed my own Phoenix Wright gif but lol'd at the one Hypes got which I did catch at the end!)

I had an unexpectedly busy weekend because I had a load of work dumped on me, but again, that's no excuse - sorry.

I've been having a wonderful time in the competition, but because everything's getting hectic for me again, well I discussed this with Devlin before the start of the contest, but I'll have to see how my work goes this week with regards to if I carry on. I would rather step back if I can't commit fully, particularly with the GRcade server migration coming up too. Anyway I'll let you all know, but if I do have to bow out I just want to say I mean no disrespect to the other Makers or to the competition! It's because I want to make sure I can reciprocate in playing levels, and having a decent go at the challenges is what makes it all fun I think.

I'll do my best to plough through enough that I can still make a level anyway, but just wanted to be transparent about the difficulties so it doesn't seem sudden if I do back out - going to do all I can to fit it in though :)

Seeing Devlin struggle with my level on last week's stream got me thinking about some of the decisions I'd made when making the level. It is impossible to know how people are going to see and play what you've made, and design decisions that at the time seem good or even just neutral can turn out to be devastating to the quality of the level. So I redesigned it. Decided to wait to post it until after the results stream for reasons.

Koopa One-shot: W56-LGF-6YF

Maybe I've taken it too far in the opposite direction and made it too obvious? Even if that's the case I think this is still the better version of that level by far, and the one I wish I had been able to submit instead.

It really shows the benefit of play testing, creating something in isolation where you only have your own instincts and feedback to refine a design has obvious limitations. I feel like I could create a "version 2" of each of my levels so far based on watching how they have played on stream!

Karl, you were unfortunate this week with the late submission and 0 point outcome but I think everyone appreciated the craft that went in to your level - it would be a shame to lose those talents going forward but I can appreciate that it's not always easy to devote the time needed to these things every week!

Aw thank you, though to be honest even I don't think my level was as good as some of the great creations this week! They were all really impressive on stream and I'm going to go back and play the ones I wasn't able to play yet when I have a bit more time too.

It's not about points though, I've been having loads of fun just making & playing - even some IRL friends are following along now, it's been a blast! I have my fingers crossed that I'll be able to carve out an evening this week and still give the level submit a good go. (I just wanted to post in advance in case I can't. Things got hectic so suddenly and I guess in case I can't make it, I don't want anyone to think I have just wandered off for no reason! :P )

Oh absolutely. It's good though, I definitely feel like I'm learning (and not just the mechanics I didn't know about  )

Week 5 Guidelines!

Mushroom Group!

Image
The recent update added a whole host of cool stuff. Some of the more notable additions were the new Power-Ups that were added to each of the game types.

Your task is to make a level around the mechanics introduced by those new power-ups. To avoid confusion the power-ups I'm refering to are:

Super Mario Bros. - Super Mario Bros 2 Mushroom
Super Mario Bros 3 - Frog Mario Suit
Power Balloon - Super Mario World
Acorn - NEW Super Mario Bros.
Boomerang - Super Mario 3D World.

Note that this does not include the various masks added to 3D World (Goomba, Bullet Bill etc), which you are not to use.

The level should revolve around this power-up and not be completable without it.

As usual you have until 8pm Sunday (10th May) to create and submit your level.

Have fun!

Goomba Mask
Bullet Bill Mask
Cannon Box

Propeller Box

You can use as many of these as you like, but you must theme the level around them.

Have fun!

Was half expecting the themes to be based on the new update! I haven't played with any of them yet, so I think that's my first port-of-call - just messing around to learn what they do!

1) I hate 3D world spike blocks. Why must they be so big?
2) Damage boosting is ruining all of my designs

Really frustrating that you can damage boost with the masks/boxes and use the iframes to wall jump off spike blocks or run along the top of them. If anyone has any tips, I'm all ears!

Running into the same problem with my level at the moment. It's easy to make sure that a power-up is required at a later time in the level, but it's also annoying for the player to be able to "cheese" the level like that only for the level to punish them for it a while later (and depending on the level it may be a long while) and require them to restart the level (or die to restart from checkpoint).

You could simply frequently give the player what's needed, but at the cost of killing the challenge.

One trick I'm using in my level (centered around flight) is using sawblades and other non-solid hazards over bottomless pits. One hit = insta-fail. Not always applicable, but it's useful some of the time in my level.

Sawblades over pits sounds like a good (if punishing) way of doing it, providing you can't just skip straight through them. Once again the 3D world differences and lack of certain objects is a problem!

I've just changed my concept entirely now anyway, avoiding the issue altogether :P
