Question about Link's moveset: is there a way to make him bounce higher when using the downward sword thrust against things like spike balls? I'm assuming that is what I need to do in one of this week's levels but can't work out how! :fp:

I found it a little tricky to execute - I didn't know bouncing with the downthrust was a thing so that was really neat to learn actually!

I quite enjoyed doing that level "properly" compared to on stream :P The boss makes a lot more sense as a classic Zelda "tennis" boss when you reflect the spike ball rather than just using bombs!

I’m glad you got it, unfortunately I couldn’t find anything you could reflect with the sword for that authentic feel. :(

Not sure if I'm just tired or crap at Mario but I've been butting up against my own limit for skill and subsequently patience more than usual this week. Some really interesting ideas on display but damn have I died a lot playing these!

I actually think "levels you can't die in" would be a really interesting weekly theme. Like "single screen" it restricts the gameplay in a way that still allows a lot of creativity.

Laptop crashed again just before flower results, so again I was watching but not logged in!

Thanks for the votes! Looking forward to week 8

Sorry I couldn't watch live but just had a skim through the stream - wow, two joint seconds! Really shows how close it's been.

Thought both winners were really well-deserved.

I was really happy with my level this week as well, but it might be a little on the harder side for sure. This season I think I just haven't done nearly as well than I have done previously. I don't know if it's because the levels I make are bad, but it feels to me like my style of level which is more traditional usually just doesn't fit in this anymore - people moved on and I'm still stuck making proper mario levels, then the one time I don't I end up making something too kaizoy lmao.

So what actually happens between me and Dragon or is there one more normal week left?

Pretty sure there's one more normal week left.

I've watched every stream and played the vast majority of the levels (saying that my coverage this week was a bit poor because I've been having a work crisis, sorry!).

I don't want to be annoyingly positive(!) but I really do think every single level has been fun. :D

For me personally, I tend to upvote levels with a memorable concept, that are of moderate difficulty (not too easy, but I prefer a little easy to a little hard, even though I've made a couple that swung the other way - it's hard to get right when you're designing!). Sometimes there's a stand-out level that is just clearly a bit better put together than the others, and that goes in first place; but mostly the levels are of a similar high quality so it's often just come down to what theme entertained me the most personally, not anything "objective". Some of my favourites of recent weeks have been RKN's rocket ships and Yubel's mechakoopas for that reason, they just made me smile!

But that doesn't mean I don't really like the kaizo ones or the ones that remind me of like, just really well put together, themed standard Mario levels. I think they're great too!

It's all to play for and I'm going to try to end the league table stages with something really ambitious(!), but I think at the moment there's good odds that RKN will win our group, see off any challenge, and represent us in the finals. I think his levels have been brilliant so it's very well deserved. <3

Yeah we've got one last week of regular competition - so there's still a chance for some movement on the leaderboards!

I agree with you Karl, I think overall the standard has been great! Whilst we sometimes have an obvious "standout" or two from the week I think in general everyone has been very close and put out some great creations over the course of the competition so far. It genuinely has been difficult to rank the levels on most weeks, I feel really bad putting someone at the bottom because it's almost always the case that their level was still really fun!

Everyone who is left in the competition I have at some point voted top of their group, so that speaks to the level of competition I think!

If there is any theme to where my votes go, I probably do skew away from the more difficult levels. I like classic Mario levels but I wonder if they are inherently harder to impress with because they can be compared directly to actual Mario levels, whereas the more novel concept levels more easily stand out.

Week 8 Guidelines!

Much like Week 4, this week both groups will be working to the same guidelines.

Image

One of the key introductions to Mario Maker 2 was the Sun and Moon.

The Sun continues its never ending pursuit of Mario, but the Moon is a little different.

When included in a level, it can invoke some very interesting effects.

I know some of you have utilised this previously in the contest, but this time you are to build a level around either the Sun or the mechanical changes the Moon introduces.

https://www.mariowiki.com/Moon_(Sup ... o_Maker_2) - This link details some of those effects.

I've deliberately left this a little vague, as I want everyone to have wildly different levels. So get to it and lets see what you come up with!

As usual you have until 8pm Sunday to submit your level to me. Have fun!

Does the moon have to be used, or is it just about the effects of night mode?

@Cheeky Devlin: Great theme! :D

Just to let you know, I think this Wiki page is a bit more comprehensive: https://supermariomaker2.fandom.com/wiki/Night
