Stuck on Karl's level now, can't seem to work out what to do here:

The spring doesn't seem to give enough height to make the jump to the left and I can't seem to do anything like throw the spring and then jump off it whilst it's still in the air!

Here's a hint:

Take the spring back the way you came.

Here's a slightly bigger hint:

You need the spring to advance in the upside down world. You grab it, bounce back on the balls, go through the pipe, then use it straight away to bounce up (down?) to the next section.

Got it in the end! :toot:

what's the point of the bit above the spring then?
I managed to get up there after a while but couldn't see anywhere else to go?

Hooray! :toot:

The two worlds are mirrored in each other. You can see that bit because it exists in the other world.

I totally see in retrospect why it was a bit confusing but it was just intended to be that reflection. :)

I think some sort of mirrored subworld is Karl's trademark now, we've had the blocked/cleared pipes, past/future, and now upside down/right way up!

Goddamn... I thought you had to jump back left and right at the start from the arrows!

Nice work on the red pipe Karl! I'm hoping to take another shot at it myself before tonight.

You'll have helped get the clear count up a bit on the level in general, when I beat it there were only two successful runs on the board!

I thought so too!
I originally had a brick block to activate the bob-omb, but it was too slow having to wait for the bob-omb to blow up so I put the on/off switch there to make it instantaneous. I completely missed that that simple change means you can just do that. :fp:

Should have gone with my original plan of stacks of POWs in place of the on/off switches and a stack of munchers barring the way to the right.

Still, nicely done on the second part Karl! (and nicely done cheesing the first part)

Here's the intended way to do it:

I did wonder what the extra shells were for! :shifty: Makes perfect sense now I've seen you do it!

It was still a great challenge!

I am flabbergastered I didn't get eliminated this week - I genuinely didn't think my level was that difficult, I put the coins in because I found no other way of making it possible to both go fast and not be under constant threat of the poison.

I think from seeing Devlin play it again the big difference is he was rushing some bits I did slowly and going slow on some bits that I did fast, I think that's what makes it a bit harder. The second part is definitely harder for sure, I even made that a lot easier as I was doing it as I found it too hard but I guess where I was playtesting it so much I got the experience to be able to beat it. Sorry guys!

I really enjoyed your level this week Qikz, it definitely was a challenge but once you get the hang of the movement mechanics then it's very achievable!

Last week's levels were all truly fantastic and I felt, more than ever, that it was tough to rank them and that it was more of a case of which one is better than any level being 'worse'. Incredible ideas and variation from everyone throughout the competition, but especially last week.

It's sad to leave the competition but I've found it tough to come up with creative ideas at a consistent rate. I was quite pleased that I managed to drum up some better levels in weeks 6 and 7 but the last week's guidelines did stump me a bit - seeing my level on stream made me see how worryingly short it really was!

In any case, I'll do my best to keep up with the thread and play through the new levels or at least watch the stream to be able to vote. A huge thanks to Devlin for running the competition once again and all the hard work that goes into it. Thank you also to all of the makers - it's great fun playing the levels (though I've watched more than I've played recently :shifty: ).

Good luck to all for the rest of the weeks! :toot: :toot: :toot:

Quarter-Final Guidelines
Image

The guidelines are quite simple. I want a "Runner" style of level.

One of my favourite types of platform levels, are the ones where the character is constantly in motion. There should be no dawdling, or waiting around. The idea is that you hit run and just keep on going until you reach the end. It should feel epic. It should give you a rush to get through. You should have jumps that require you to hit the right spot at the right time and to keep going. You CAN have Mario change direction, but the aim of the level is to keep him going fast, so make sure you take that into account. There is no restriction to certain games or level types, but with the expanded moveset available, New Super Mario Bros might be helpful.

The key to this challenge will be to get your level of difficulty just right. Too hard and you run the risk of frustrating the players. Too easy, and well, where's the fun in that?

You have until 8pm on Sunday 5th July to get this in! Bear in mind that the two highest ranked makers will progress to the Semi-Final so I need to see your best work!

Good luck!

EDIT: Just as clarification I do not want to see the Car used. This is for a "Runner" type level.

I am so glad I get to skip this one because those guidelines scream "car level" to me :shifty:

This sounds like an interesting theme! As Devlin suggested on stream I'm tempted to have a go at sticking up a level myself just to keep my hand in but I'm definitely interested to see what everyone produces.

 Well, Devlin did say the semi-finalists are still free to submit a level to the stream...
