Wahoo! That's right folks the day has arrived when Are You A Master Mario Maker returns to the hallowed mushroom lands of GRcade!
I really enjoyed the AYAMMM competition last year and I know others did too so after much thought (and of course after receiving the official nod from AYAMMM founder and eternal legend Cheeky Devlin ) I thought it would be a great idea to bring it back for another slice of Mario creativity!
My default view would be to keep things pretty much the same as before but I'm open to any ideas if anyone has a strong view on tweaking things! For those not in the know the basic structure of AYAMMM involves makers creating a new level based on a theme or set of criteria every two weeks, with the alternate weeks used to play and rate everyone else's submissions. Each week the new levels would be showcased on twitch and then revisited with the results revealed the following week. After a number of rounds (which may vary depending on numbers of participants) we enter knockout stages and whittle the field down until we have a final showdown between the top GR makers!
So who's up for it? Just post "IN " in the thread if you want to get involved!
As this is the first time I'll be taking the helm I'll keep sign ups open for a little while to allow discussion on any possible refinements or updates to the setup as we head into a new generation of AYAMMM, then I'll see who we've got on board and take it from there!

Current Standings
How Does It Work?
In a change from last years setup we are resting the groups and everyone will be competing in one collective Mario Maker League!
The competition will take the form of a series of two week rounds during which Makers will create and submit their own level, and play and rate each others.
Each round I will provide a set of guidelines for a level, this will outline the theme, goal or any restrictions which you will need to work to when creating your level. - Guidelines for each round will be posted when the last round's levels have been submitted - All levels must be your own work and created for the contest - you cannot submit existing levels or copy anyone else's! - Submission deadline for levels will be Sunday at 8PM (week 1).
When the levels have been submitted I will showcase them LIVE on Twitch before posting them in the thread at which point you can start playing and ranking them - Do NOT post your levels in thread, all submissions are done via PM to myself and then I will release them to the thread - Failure to submit a level will result in a Maker receiving a 0 score for that round. If you have a valid reason for struggling with a deadline then let me know by PM before the deadline and I may be able to grant a limited extension
Once the levels have been released to the thread each Maker will have one week to play each of the levels and rank them. - Do NOT post rakings in the thread. Rankings must be submitted to my via PM - Submission deadline for level rankings will be Sunday at 8PM (week 2) - Failure to submit rankings will result in a Maker receiving a 0 score for that round. As before if you have a situation where you may not be able to submit rankings then contact me via PM ASAP.
After 5 rounds of making we will begin eliminating makers! - The bottom ranked maker at the end of round 5 will be eliminated - Eliminations will continue until we are left with the top 4 makers
Once we are down to the final 4 we enter the Play-Offs! - This will consist of two semi-finals: 1st playing 4th, and 2nd playing 3rd
The winners of the two semi-finals will then compete in the Grand Final with the winner being crowned the 2021 GRcade Master Mario Maker!
TLDR?
Each round you make a level and rank everyone else's.
If something doesn't make sense just shout. I will make it clear each round and each week what everyone needs to do!

Round 1 Guidelines
Oh no! Kamek's magic has been unleashed and the world we once knew has become twisted and changed before our eyes! What new traps and challenges will await Mario when he returns to his old stomping grounds!?
Using any level from World 1 of Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros 3 or Super Mario World as a basis create a twist on an existing level!
You can be as inventive or creative as you like but there must be a recognisable sense of the original level still in there.
Maybe a new enemy type has overrun the space? Perhaps the terrain has shifted and new obstacles have appeared to thwart Mario? Maybe the whole look and feel of the world has changed in terms of theming and ambience?!
Whatever you do just make sure the player gets a new twist on one of these opening spaces!
There are NO restrictions on level elements that can be used so it's up to you to decide how far you want to stray from a traditional feel to proceedings.
For the avoidance of doubt eligible "World 1" levels are as follows:
From SMW: * Yoshi's Island 1 * Yoshi's Island 2 * Yoshi's Island 3 * Yoshi's Island 4 * Yellow Switch Palace * Iggy's Castle
Submission deadline is 8pm Sunday 7th of February - send your level name and code to me via PM. - Do not post the level in the thread or otherwise share it with anyone beforehand.

1. Maker E 2. Maker B 3. Maker A 4. Maker C 5. Maker G ...
You have until 8PM Sunday 14th February to submit your rankings to me by PM

Round 2 Guidelines
After a hard day being a tennis player/theme park owner/footballer/street dancer/olympic athlete/chef/golf superstar/time traveller/go-kart driver/boxing referee/baseball player/doctor ... Mario misses the simple days when his only job was to climb elaborate towers, dodge barrels and rescue people from giant monkeys!
In honour of Mario's former Donkey Kong duelling days your challenge this round is to create a Vertical Based Level! You can have Mario climbing up a mountain, down a tower, through a volcano or whatever takes your fancy but your level must feature No Horizontal Scrolling
Mario Maker 2 introduced the "scroll stop" feature which allows Makers to control camera scrolling and lock the screen in place in one or both of the axis, you'll need to make use of this feature to have Mario only worried about verticality. You can scroll vertically as much as you like and make use of parts like doors and pipes to transfer between different locations but your level must be focused on vertical based traversal and wherever Mario goes the camera must never scroll horizontally!
Submission deadline is 8pm Sunday 21st of February - send your level name and code to me via PM. - Do not post the level in the thread or otherwise share it with anyone beforehand.

Round 3 Guidelines
As he looked up into the face of his enemy only one thought was going through his mind - "not this time". Too much destruction had been caused by this point to even contemplate turning back, too many Toads lost to their onslaught, too many Yoshi's sacrificed to keep one step ahead of their unstoppable chase. He saw the muzzle flash and steeled himself for one final push, allowing himself a wry smile as his mind focused once more on victory. They say that somewhere out there is a bullet with everyone's name on it "well," he thought "it's not going to be this one..."
Excuse the interruption from my Mario fan-fic there... Round 3 is all about Bullet Bill Levels! A long time menace of Mario and his pals I want to see your levels making extensive use of these pesky projectiles. Whether it's having Mario partake in a bout of bullet bouncing, running the gauntlet through waves of bullet obstacles, facing down the threat of the giant or heatseeking variants or otherwise exploring how these enemies can be used to enable exploration or interact with their environment, I want to see those bullets fly!
There are no specific item or theme restrictions (yes you can even use the Koopa Car if you really want to!) but the key is that your levels must make clear use of one or more varieties of bullet bill enemies - they should make up the main challenge of the level and it shouldn't be possible to get through it without encountering them in some way.
Submission deadline is 8pm Sunday 7th of March - send your level name and code to me via PM. - Do not post the level in the thread or otherwise share it with anyone beforehand.

Typically how many hours would be required for a course? And by course, I mean something not embarrassingly bad?
I don't think the time commitment is too bad, from my experience last time I'd say it takes as much time as you want it to. There were weeks where I spent barely more than an hour on my course and others where I was more free and so dumped more time into it. I'm not convinced the weeks where I spent more time were actually any better!
I'd say give it a go, ultimately it's about having fun more than anything and nobody is going to be ripping into levels or criticising anyone if they haven't poured 10 hours of time into a level every week! i
I'd like things to be as accessible as possible so if there are tweaks to the formula that can help people feel more comfortable as we go then I'm open to that.
Lime wrote:Well..... I now have a Switch (unlike the last time this ran) but at this point I don't have Mario Maker 2..
I'm tempted, depending on how many people are up for the competition. How cheaply can it be bought for these days?
It's a first party Nintendo game so unfortunately it's not really dropped too much I don't think.
CDKeys has it for £43.99 or £54.99 with a year of Switch online included.
Hmmm, do I need switch online to upload/download levels? This could be more expensive than I thought.
Fraid so.
Yeah online is require to share levels and play other people's.
No pressure either way, if you can join in then that would be excellent but totally understand if it's not possible!
If it helps the plan isn't to start immediately, I was really using this thread to gauge interest before moving into full gear so it will probably be a few weeks before we actually start.

I am unsure, I've skipped on all the bar the first 2 and pulled out on the 2nd due to not having the time, but as I'm streaming/recording less in general I should be OK to go for it. I'll jump into this one, yeah. I can't see it being an issue with time.
By the time the previous contest ended, I felt as though I'd came to the end of the line creatively and I regret to say that's still the case. Tempting as it is (seriously, this fence I'm sitting on is threatening to rupture my asshole right now), it's with a heavy heart I've decided to take a backseat on this occasion.
Will certainly be watching with keen interest though.
Maybe we could think of something to encourage people interested in following along but lacking the time or inclination to compete to still play the levels and vote? Maybe a parallel competition based on setting the speed run records for the levels each week? That seemed relatively popular last time as a thing to do and the game tracks it anyway.
