Congrats Victor, and well done Karl too on a close-fought final! It's been a really enjoyable competition, thanks Jen for running it! The streams were a particular highlight over lockdowns as something to do

My favourite level of the whole thing might still be Karl's metroid level - I thought that was really cool. There have been some cracking levels otherwise though, the quality this competition was really high.

My most popular level by some margin ended up being One Screen 1-1, which is only beaten in total plays and likes by two levels I uploaded when the game first came out and was way busier, so that has been a nice surprise! I must have got some luck of the algorithm there thanks to, I guess, a high likes-to-plays ratio early on and a fair few comments.

I enjoyed when we get competitive on the speedruns too (even if it dropped off by the end of the competition), that added a fun extra layer to the competition and also meant getting a lot more out of some of the submitted levels.

I hope this isn't the end of the Mario Making, although a break now will be welcomed! I like Victor's idea of a single-week Christmas special, that could be good fun (and easy to make everyone use the snow theme for a seasonal feel). There was also talk earlier of continuing in a more relaxed, non-competitive format, but I'm not convinced it would work unfortunately - the free submission week ended up being just myself and Rubix submitting and on stream, and the third/fourth playoff didn't seem to get much traction either, which would suggest anything off the golden path of the competition struggles to hold people's interest.

Yeah I also like the idea of doing a Christmas Special, a nice excuse to get the snow theme out which has seen relatively little use otherwise! Doing something more casual would also be really fun, but I think you're right in that it may be hard to sustain interest - I believe Cyborg started a thread along these lines not long after the game came out and it seemed hard to keep people going without the draw of a competition. :(

I would also second the shout for Karl's Metroid level as being a top effort - that really impressed me a lot and came out of nowhere as well in terms of being unexpected within what I was imagining people would do with that round! Similarly Cyborg's "Burglar: The Dim Task" was fantastic, a very impressive 0451 game within the limitations of Mario Maker! But really there were just so many excellent creations this year, I really didn't for a moment expect the level of quality to be this high throughout the whole competition. Well done everyone! :toot:

Here's the Results Breakdown for the final:

Image

This shows the number of votes that each level received at each "placing" - so for example the 2 in the top row for Karl's "Gwyn, Lord of Cinder" indicates that two people voted it as their favourite level overall.

Like I said on the stream, there really wasn't much in it! Victor had just a few more votes for best level overall which was a big bonus for him, The Fate of the Victorverse getting 3 votes as the best level is probably the thing that swung it. Karl's votes tended to be slightly more tightly clustered - other than "Bed of Chaos" the range between the spread of votes was only 5, whereas the scoring of Victor's levels had a bit more variation to them. Mario Bros. Adcade gets the unfortunate status of being the only level that was voted as both the best and the worst across our players!

Once again well done to both of the finalists for crafting 4 really impressive levels, and to everyone who has taken part throughout! :D

Blimey, so it was really the music in the victorverse level that swung it.

Cool it was so close, shows the effort from.both sides was warranted.

A 1 week Christmas level would be good fun I think.

Interesting to see the breakdown, my votes were definitely not typical

Wow! I'm surprised it was so close! As I said on stream, I genuinely would have voted Victor - but saying that, I have to admit, I'm selfishly quite happy it wasn't a landslide. ;)

I'm also shocked (but pleased!) to have nabbed the "Best World" vote even though my levels ranked a bit worse. I'm really glad people liked the world overall.

EDIT: Oh, and if we're talking about best levels, I think RKN's Pokemon game was probably my personal fave!

Very well done Victor and a well deserved finale finish for Karl!

Been lurking through this competition and there was some amazing talent on show. Thanks Jenuall for running it too!

Oh crap, how could I forget RKN's Pokémon level! Another fantastic effort. :toot:

The standard was really, really impressive throughout and it was an absolute privilege to get to play all of your levels each week :D

RKN's Pokémon level was probably my jaw dropping moment in this whole thing, not so much the gameplay but look and attention to detail was spot on. My favorite level of the whole competition.

The Pokemon one was excellent, even more so for me as I've never played one, yet I was able to recognise areas and such. It also somehow seemed to not be contained within the confines of a normal level.

There were so many stand out levels and clever moments throughout.

Rubix's Tetris homage, Victor's Mario Kart track, Pedz's really cool Bullet Bill section where you had to get the bullets to open up the passageway, Cyborg's 101 uses for a POW block, Rula's pinball level, Qikz's cool vertical cape level which was one of the few with a multiplayer consideration... the list goes on!

Oh and anyone who trolled me with a Koopa Car gets a special mention!

Thanks guys  Interesting that the decidedly un-mario levels were often the ones to stand out. For me I really like the novelty and creativity shown by something that is unexpected from what is a limited level creator. My favourite rounds were the franchise homage and the one screen levels both for making and playing everyone else's.

Victor Mildew wrote:It also somehow seemed to not be contained within the confines of a normal level.

I deliberately tried to stop it from looking like it was contained in a rectangle in the way it actually was by varying the borders. On the left and right of the map I avoided having the hard-edge actually at the edge of the screen, so to the left it looks like the world continues into another route that is blocked off, and to the right it looks like the sea doesn't end as you can't scroll the screen enough to see a scroll locking edge. Then I had the roads running vertically that were blocked by what were supposed to look like cars, which helped break up the top and bottom edges, and I made some houses look like they were going off the top and bottom of the screen too.

Basically, I'm glad for this comment letting me know that effort wasn't wasted

The single screen level where 1-1 arrived on tracks and moved past you, was so clever. The level with the train - I still don't know how that was even done

I'd like to tell you I know exactly how it works with off-screen spawn distances, track movement and scroll speed, but no, it was just a lot of trial-and-error

It really was fantastic. So much creativity from everything I've seen, and it sounds like that continued after I unfortunately dropped off from viewing. The finals from that spreadsheet definitely looked close, and as I said previously, I'll be enjoying them sometime soon. Thanks Jenuall for running the competition. You were a great host.

Congratulations Victor on a well-earned victory, and also Karl for a very close 2nd.

This was, as always, great fun to take part in. A huge part of that is thanks to Jenuall for taking on the role as well as he did. Amazing job all around.

I went on my switch and started this up last night, to see how my levels have done in the months since we did this.

:x

Not many plays, although the donkey Kong themed one has about 300 plays, way higher than the others for some reason. I can only assume the title must make it appealing to try out.

How would people feel about a one off AYAMMM Christmas Special? Just one week and one set of levels, winner takes all kind of thing?
