Wahoo! That's right folks the day has arrived when Are You A Master Mario Maker returns to the hallowed mushroom lands of GRcade! :toot:

I really enjoyed the AYAMMM competition last year and I know others did too so after much thought (and of course after receiving the official nod from AYAMMM founder and eternal legend Cheeky Devlin :wub: ) I thought it would be a great idea to bring it back for another slice of Mario creativity!

How Does It Work?
In a change from last years setup we are resting the groups and everyone will be competing in one collective Mario Maker League!

The competition will take the form of a series of two week rounds during which Makers will create and submit their own level, and play and rate each others.

Each round I will provide a set of guidelines for a level, this will outline the theme, goal or any restrictions which you will need to work to when creating your level.
- Guidelines for each round will be posted when the last round's levels have been submitted
- All levels must be your own work and created for the contest - you cannot submit existing levels or copy anyone else's!
- Submission deadline for levels will be Sunday at 8PM (week 1).

When the levels have been submitted I will showcase them LIVE on Twitch before posting them in the thread at which point you can start playing and ranking them
- Do NOT post your levels in thread, all submissions are done via PM to myself and then I will release them to the thread
- Failure to submit a level will result in a Maker receiving a 0 score for that round. If you have a valid reason for struggling with a deadline then let me know by PM before the deadline and I may be able to grant a limited extension

Once the levels have been released to the thread each Maker will have one week to play each of the levels and rank them.
- Do NOT post rakings in the thread. Rankings must be submitted to my via PM
- Submission deadline for level rankings will be Sunday at 8PM (week 2)
- Failure to submit rankings will result in a Maker receiving a 0 score for that round. As before if you have a situation where you may not be able to submit rankings then contact me via PM ASAP.

After 5 rounds of making we will begin eliminating makers!
- The bottom ranked maker at the end of round 5 will be eliminated
- Eliminations will continue until we are left with the top 4 makers

Once we are down to the final 4 we enter the Play-Offs!
- This will consist of two semi-finals: 1st playing 4th, and 2nd playing 3rd

The winners of the two semi-finals will then compete in the Grand Final with the winner being crowned the 2021 GRcade Master Mario Maker!

TLDR?

Each round you make a level and rank everyone else's.

If something doesn't make sense just shout. I will make it clear each round and each week what everyone needs to do! :D

Oh no! Kamek's magic has been unleashed and the world we once knew has become twisted and changed before our eyes! What new traps and challenges will await Mario when he returns to his old stomping grounds!?

Using any level from World 1 of Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros 3 or Super Mario World as a basis create a twist on an existing level!

You can be as inventive or creative as you like but there must be a recognisable sense of the original level still in there.

Maybe a new enemy type has overrun the space? Perhaps the terrain has shifted and new obstacles have appeared to thwart Mario? Maybe the whole look and feel of the world has changed in terms of theming and ambience?!

Whatever you do just make sure the player gets a new twist on one of these opening spaces!

There are NO restrictions on level elements that can be used so it's up to you to decide how far you want to stray from a traditional feel to proceedings.

For the avoidance of doubt eligible "World 1" levels are as follows:

From SMB1:
* W1-1
* W1-2
* W1-3
* W1-4

From SMB3:
* W1-1
* W1-2
* W1-3
* W1-4
* W1-Fortress
* W1-5
* W1-6
* W1-Airship

From SMW:
* Yoshi's Island 1
* Yoshi's Island 2
* Yoshi's Island 3
* Yoshi's Island 4
* Yellow Switch Palace
* Iggy's Castle

Submission deadline is 8pm Sunday 7th of February - send your level name and code to me via PM.
- Do not post the level in the thread or otherwise share it with anyone beforehand.

All Makers now need to play and rank everyone else's creations.

Essentially you need to send me a list of all of the levels (you don't rank your own obviously :P ) ranked. For example:

1. Maker E
2. Maker B
3. Maker A
4. Maker C
5. Maker G
...

You have until 8PM Sunday 14th February to submit your rankings to me by PM

After a hard day being a tennis player/theme park owner/footballer/street dancer/olympic athlete/chef/golf superstar/time traveller/go-kart driver/boxing referee/baseball player/doctor ... Mario misses the simple days when his only job was to climb elaborate towers, dodge barrels and rescue people from giant monkeys!

In honour of Mario's former Donkey Kong duelling days your challenge this round is to create a Vertical Based Level! You can have Mario climbing up a mountain, down a tower, through a volcano or whatever takes your fancy but your level must feature No Horizontal Scrolling

Mario Maker 2 introduced the "scroll stop" feature which allows Makers to control camera scrolling and lock the screen in place in one or both of the axis, you'll need to make use of this feature to have Mario only worried about verticality. You can scroll vertically as much as you like and make use of parts like doors and pipes to transfer between different locations but your level must be focused on vertical based traversal and wherever Mario goes the camera must never scroll horizontally!

Submission deadline is 8pm Sunday 21st of February - send your level name and code to me via PM.

As he looked up into the face of his enemy only one thought was going through his mind - "not this time". Too much destruction had been caused by this point to even contemplate turning back, too many Toads lost to their onslaught, too many Yoshi's sacrificed to keep one step ahead of their unstoppable chase. He saw the muzzle flash and steeled himself for one final push, allowing himself a wry smile as his mind focused once more on victory. They say that somewhere out there is a bullet with everyone's name on it "well," he thought "it's not going to be this one..."

Excuse the interruption from my Mario fan-fic there... Round 3 is all about Bullet Bill Levels! A long time menace of Mario and his pals I want to see your levels making extensive use of these pesky projectiles. Whether it's having Mario partake in a bout of bullet bouncing, running the gauntlet through waves of bullet obstacles, facing down the threat of the giant or heatseeking variants or otherwise exploring how these enemies can be used to enable exploration or interact with their environment, I want to see those bullets fly!

There are no specific item or theme restrictions (yes you can even use the Koopa Car if you really want to!) but the key is that your levels must make clear use of one or more varieties of bullet bill enemies - they should make up the main challenge of the level and it shouldn't be possible to get through it without encountering them in some way.

Remember Game & Watch? Those funny little hand held single screen game toys that Nintendo made in the 80s? Remember how they were all a bit crap? Well now's your chance to channel your inner Gunpei Yokoi and make your own single screen game! (Only try to make it less rubbish than the real ones) :toot:

Oh yes, it's a return of one of the favourite rounds from previous AYAMMM competitions, the One Screen Wonder! This is a test of your ability to make an entertaining Mario experience within the confines of a single screen of play space. That's right, everything from the starting point to the end goal must exist within a single screen!

There are no part or theme limitations this round, you can do whatever you like within that one screen of space - a maze, a puzzle, a compact platforming challenge, or anything else you can think of!

The "play space" available to Mario must be within the limits of a single screen (24 blocks wide x 14 blocks tall). The end goal (flag, axe, fruit machine etc.) must be inside this single screen space, but the space beyond the goal (e.g. the end castle) does not count towards the active space and so can be beyond the 24 block width limit - as such horizontal scrolling caused by these end areas is acceptable.

Course parts such as tracks or elements used to events/timing can be outside the limits of this single screen space

The only vertical scrolling allowed is the single block scroll used when Mario "runs across the top of the level (this is achieved by allowing Mario above 14 blocks high when there is no level content present above that point)

Simple rule of thumb: the player should be able to see all of the playable area of the level as soon as it loads and at no point whilst the player is in control of Mario should he move beyond the 24x14 block single screen space (with the exception of the running on top of the level scenario above)

So, will this round be your "Fame & Watch" moment to shine, or will it be more of a "Game & Botch" situation?! Let's find out... :lol:

In honour of the latest entry in the smash hit (overrated ;) ) Monster Hunter series Mario has donned his trusty suit of armour and is heading out on the hunt! and yes I get the title doesn't really work because it implies that Mario is the thing being hunted, deal with it! :lol:

Okay folks time for things to get real, this is the last round before we lose one of our fantastic Makers so we really are entering into srs bsns territory now 8-) Your challenge for this round is to create a level which casts Mario as a hunter, but what he is hunting down is entirely up to you! You must use the Clear Conditions to create a level that cannot be finished until Mario has either collected or defeated your chosen hunt target(s).

You can have a single target - perhaps a boss that Mario must track down and destroy or a well hidden treasure that must be unearthed, or maybe your hunt is more about quantity and Mario will be sent out to hunt down multiple targets - say collecting 100 of his trusty coins? The choice is yours!

There are no part or theme limitations this round, you can use whatever items or styles you would like to stage your hunt arena!

So Mario, are you ready to take on the hunt?

Submission deadline is 8pm Sunday 4th of April - send your level name and code to me via PM.

Do you ever feel like the world is getting away from you? That the ground seems to be moving beneath your feet and you just can't get a handle on things? Are you worried that your life is on the wrong track and that everyone else has found the cheat code to life letting them race along in the fast lane whilst you toil away for nothing?

DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT, JUST MAKE SOME MARIO COURSES AND IT WILL ALL BE FINE!!! :toot:

This round I want you all to create your own entry into that thrilling category of Mario courses that is: The Track Level! That's right this time out I want to see Mario facing a challenge that is heavily focussed on track traversal - whether that's a single long track that our brave plumber needs to stick with from start to finish whilst avoiding an oncoming assault, a daring race as he leaps between multiple tracks to avoid hazards, or something altogether different - the choice is yours!

Any Mario fan has played their fair share of these kinds of courses so you'll know the drill. There are no part or theme limitations - you can style the course in any way you would like, there can be a mix of solid ground and other platforms throughout the course, but the key challenge of the level needs to be focussed around Mario getting from A to B using course parts attached to tracks - the player shouldn't be able to get to the end without making use of these tracks - just falling to the ground and running to the end is not the aim of the game here!

Are we going to be taken on an underground mine cart dash, a thrilling rainbow ride through the clouds or possibly some kind of crazy underwater submarine track?! The options are endless!*

Submission deadline is 8pm Sunday 18th of April - send your level name and code to me via PM.
- Do not post the level in the thread or otherwise share it with anyone beforehand.

*Note, options are not actually endless and are bounded by your own skill and imagination as well as the limitations of the software provided. No apology is given for getting your hopes up about endless possibilities.

Uh Oh! Mario is having something of a mid-life crisis. The plumbing business doesn't really spark the same joy as it once did and the 35 years of rejection from Peach has really started to wear him down! :cry: But just as every Cuthbert Colin Caterpillar transforms into a beautiful butterfly like the ones it used to gaze at from afar, so to Mario has decided to re-invent himself in the image and trappings of one of his fellow gaming super stars! But who will form the inspiration for his re-incarnation?

The aim of the game for this round is to make a level that evokes another franchise! You can recreate the layout of another space, try to replicate some specific mechanics, or simply create something that evokes the feel of your chosen franchise. The choice is yours! :toot:

Is Mario going to find himself in an R-Type style shmup bullet hell? Is he going to be exploring a recreation of a famous level from another platforming franchise? What twists might the Mario gameplay bring to such a space?

Are you going to try and recreate the mechanics of another genre with the tools that Mario Maker provides? We've already seen flavours of Metroidvania, Pinball and Tetris make their way into this years contest, will we see more of these or possibly even something entirely new? Maybe even something featuring a Koopa Trooper Car?!

Semi Final Guidelines

"If you can't stand the heat then get out of the kitchen!" That's what Chef Toad always used to yell at Mario when he wandered into the wrong areas of the castle again, claiming to be on the hunt for "magic mushrooms". Well Mario heeded that advice but didn't pay much attention to where he went next and it has definitely been a case of 'out of the frying pan and into the fire' as he has only gone and found himself trapped in some fiery hell-scape from which it will take more than psychedelic mushrooms to escape!

That's right we're into the semi-finals of AYAMMM 2021 and things are really starting to heat up! The goal for our final 4 Mario Makers this time is to make a Lava based level! with a specific focus on channelling the feel of classic kids game
"the floor is lava" - we want Mario to really feel the heat and never quite feel like he's standing on safe ground!

The conditions here are that you must use the Castle Theme to allow your level to contain lava (I'll also allow the use of the Forest Night Theme as this turns the water into poison which is essentially the same thing)

In addition you should make heavy use of the various forms of moving/temporary parts for Mario to stand on - we don't want too much solid ground for our plumber to chill out on! Moving lifts, snake blocks, donut blocks, flimsy lifts, enemies you can stand on - they're all fair game to help make a level where Mario feels like he's only ever one step from landing in the lava!

I'm not going to put a limit on the use of actual solid ground in the level as I don't want to be too pedantic about it, but the overall feel should be one of lacking safe spaces in the level to kick back in! For example a large ground platform where you can just stand there and take stock indefinitely = bad, but that same platform where the lava is rising to kill you or a buzzsaw is approaching to slice Mario in two or even where the autoscroll will shove you into the lava if you're not careful - those are all fine! :nod:

Submission deadline is 8pm Sunday 16th of May - send your level name and code to me via PM.
- Do not post the level in the thread or otherwise share it with anyone beforehand.

3rd Place Playoff Guidelines

Who's this swinging through the trees? Is it Tarzan on his way to rescue Jane? Is it Donkey Kong on his way to deliver another disappointing platform adventure? No, it's Mario! He has donned his best explorers outfit and headed into the trees to take on all kinds of challenges!

That's right, for your 3rd place play off challenge you will need to create a level using the Forest Theme (which for the purposes of the naming of this round I am choosing to be a jungle instead of a forest ;) ) and provide Mario with your best Forest and jungle themed space to explore!

Vines, trees, water traps, piranha plants, deadly bugs and fish - there is plenty to work with to make your level an exciting and dangerous place for Mario to adventure across so lets see what you can do!

Submission deadline is 8pm Sunday 6th of June - send your level name and code to me via PM.

Grand Final Guidelines

As Mario stood on the precipice of this, the final chapter of his last great adventure he knew that he had to press on and finish the fight. Behind him lay the crumbling facades of defeated castles, the wreckage of doomed Koopa cars, and the empty shells of more Troopers than he could bear to count.

"Was it worth it?" he asked himself. The pain, the struggle, the endless hunt for strawberry floating red coins? Only this last World could provide him with the answer.

Would this be the scene of one of his greatest triumphs - a sequence of tricks, traps and challenges that would live on in legend, or a damp squib of an ending - something not even fit for a lowly Donkey Kong game? Mario lowered his cap and adjusted his overalls one last time, readying himself for what was to come next: "time to find out!"

That's right finalists, as is AYAMMM tradition your final task is to create your own world containing 4 complete levels! You can pick any of the previous guidelines for the basis for each level (including the 3rd place play off guidelines) and once created you must place these within your own Super World using the world maker tools added in the final SMM2 update! In the tradition of Super Mario worlds you must also make sure your final level concludes with a boss encounter!

Each level must be new for the final - no repeats of existing levels please!

So, will you revisit some of your previous favourite sets of guidelines or attempt to create something where you felt like you didn't quite nail it last time? The choice is yours!

Submission deadline is 8pm Sunday 13th of June - upload each of your levels and the super world and then send the level names and codes along to me via PM.
- Do not post the level in the thread or otherwise share it with anyone beforehand.

So yeah Jenuall approached me (via pm at an appropriate pandemic social distance) to ask if I would be happy for him to move forward.

Frankly I can't think of anyone more suitable than the reigning Master Mario Maker.

I won't be taking part, but I will be watching with great interest and I wish all the participants and Jenuall the best of luck!

Have fun!

Well..... I now have a Switch (unlike the last time this ran) but at this point I don't have Mario Maker 2..

I'm tempted, depending on how many people are up for the competition. How cheaply can it be bought for these days?

It's a first party Nintendo game so unfortunately it's not really dropped too much I don't think.

CDKeys has it for £43.99 or £54.99 with a year of Switch online included.

Hmmm, do I need switch online to upload/download levels? This could be more expensive than I thought.

I'm kinda interested as I never really got into the making side of Mario Maker 2 but I also don't have a lot of time.

Typically how many hours would be required for a course? And by course, I mean something not embarrassingly bad?

I don't think the time commitment is too bad, from my experience last time I'd say it takes as much time as you want it to. There were weeks where I spent barely more than an hour on my course and others where I was more free and so dumped more time into it. I'm not convinced the weeks where I spent more time were actually any better! :slol:

I'd say give it a go, ultimately it's about having fun more than anything and nobody is going to be ripping into levels or criticising anyone if they haven't poured 10 hours of time into a level every week! i

I'd like things to be as accessible as possible so if there are tweaks to the formula that can help people feel more comfortable as we go then I'm open to that.

Fraid so.

Yeah online is require to share levels and play other people's.

No pressure either way, if you can join in then that would be excellent but totally understand if it's not possible!

If it helps the plan isn't to start immediately, I was really using this thread to gauge interest before moving into full gear so it will probably be a few weeks before we actually start. :D

Typically how many hours would be required for a course? And by course, I mean something not embarrassingly bad?

I am unsure, I've skipped on all the bar the first 2 and pulled out on the 2nd due to not having the time, but as I'm streaming/recording less in general I should be OK to go for it. I'll jump into this one, yeah. I can't see it being an issue with time.

I'll join if I can - it's hard for me to commit to a competition that plays out over many weeks but fingers crossed.

I'll see about joining in with this one. We'll see if my Animal Crossing title of Creative Coconut holds any merit.

By the time the previous contest ended, I felt as though I'd came to the end of the line creatively and I regret to say that's still the case. Tempting as it is (seriously, this fence I'm sitting on is threatening to rupture my asshole right now), it's with a heavy heart I've decided to take a backseat on this occasion.

Will certainly be watching with keen interest though. :datass:

Maybe we could think of something to encourage people interested in following along but lacking the time or inclination to compete to still play the levels and vote? Maybe a parallel competition based on setting the speed run records for the levels each week? That seemed relatively popular last time as a thing to do and the game tracks it anyway.
