Super Mario World is the best looking Mario game. It's beautiful.

I can get behind having SMB or SMB3 as your favourite theme, but I can't understand disliking SMW. It's cute!

I don't think it's the visuals but the cape can be a pain in the ass. There have been some good SMW levels so far and even some good SM3D. It depends on what you do with it.

I'm trying to learn what people like and dislike, it seems water levels are a no no and anything that auto scrolls

I will start making my level next week. Basically, I won't be making one :lol:

I don't think SMW is offensively unattractive or anything, but for me it does feature an art style that doesn't really appeal - it lacks the retro nostalgia of the first game and the effortless charm of the 3rd.

It's the culmination of several complaints for me. In general I tend not to find 16 bit era games that good looking, there is often a messiness or over-business to the art from the increased colour palette and that ages the games more than older-but-cleaner games that happen to scale better to crisp, modern displays. I'd probably find a CRT filter more appealing for SNES games than NES games for example even though both had art designed for display by CRT. Contrast with the GBA which is visually SNES adjacent but had games designed for its sharper screen and also has from my perspective more good looking games - those facts are probably related (and might contribute towards my dislike of ALTTP's art style having played it first on GBA).

I also find the art style in SMW specifically a bit inconsistent. I think this is mostly because of the inconsistent use of solid black borders, but there are also course elements with varying perspective or appearance of depth - some look flat while some are strongly rounded through shading or other ways perspective is applied like in enemy animation. I especially don't like the standard blocks that look more 3D until you hit them but then do that spinny thing appearing as flat boards (which begs the question of how Mario is standing on them).

That brings me on nicely to the redesigns that I don't like. The standard blocks are one, both in appearance and function (they completely lose that satisfaction of breaking blocks in the previous games). Goombas are another, I just really don't like the SMW redesign in comparison to regular goombas.

So yeah, basically a combination of era, style and design!

Seems like people have enjoyed my pinball level, then. As ever, today is the day I play and rate, and from what little I've seen in here about the levels, I'm in for a good time.

I'll be playing them all tonight too.

My use of tracks means that in the editor it actually looks nothing like how it does to play :lol:

I am expecting a lot from the Track king.
