I misread the guidelines a bit and was simply trying to make my level fit a specific genre rather than a franchise. The good news is that despite that my level ended up being more like one franchise in that genre (and the name of my level is a spoof on the name of that series).
However the description does include a couple of references to another series within that genre, which I take it is grounds for immediate disqualification from the rest of the contest and all future contests (AYAMMM or otherwise)?

He's the only one crossed out in image because I've not got round to updating it but Rula and Qikz are crossed out in the player list!

Thanks to those who joined me for the Round 7 stream, we witnessed a frankly incredible selection of levels - as always you guys have impressed me with both your ingenuity and skill!

Round 7 Levels

Caught up now - really cool levels! OrangeRKN's in particular I thought was spectacular, but the others were great too!

(Just to confirm, it's intended that you don't have to do all the fights in a row in my one. I thought that would be tedious!

And I was thinking more of the "versus" mode where you choose a character to fight!)

I did the code input in cyborg's level and damn it was cool - hopefully jenuall will find it in the results stream because I think he'd like it a lot!

I also am really impressed with the loop in Rubix's level (after building up my anticipation from the stream) - it works! I found the red coin and got through the locked door too.

Just all round a great set of levels. Set a few decent times across them, just cyborg's I haven't given a proper speedrun attempt yet (feels like it could be complex!).

Bomberman was really fun to try and do quickly - there is the choice of door, general routing, and also some tricky execution to be as quick as possible because of the swimming physics.

Just watched the stream. God damn what a great set of levels, this round is going to be impossible to rank :dread:

You had a simple one like this, then the same puzzle would get increasingly, more complex as you moved along (multiple snake things you had to start off in a different order to move the bomb around. Annoying as this was a good one.

Other themes is started and abandoned:

Rainbow islands (using the sky and rainbow theme I found in the Beanstalk level). Looked great but wasn't very different to normal Mario gameplay wise

Pacman - worked really well but i was convinced someone else would do it so didn't finish it.

I got fairly far into a couple of Dark Souls themed levels but they didn't really work, at least for the competition. One problem is that, while not impossible, it's very difficult to create shortcuts that remain unlocked after you die and go back to a flag. A second problem is actually in the marmite nature of Souls gameplay, right? You don't want to frustrate or upset people, or lock them out with an execution barrier, but at the same time without a somewhat frustrating, high technical precision boss in there, it's not going to feel very Soulslike.

I also played about with a Water Temple concept which I thought was cool, but in the end I felt like it would be more novel and fun to avoid Zelda stuff.

Going to play them soon, can already see that the levels are at a high standard this week. You guys blow my mind

This is my final official course but I hope you don’t mind if I unofficially join in, I have enjoyed being part of this group.

How does the competition work after this point - will we be waiting until after the results stream for guidelines?

No I just forgot to put them out because it was a bank holiday :fp:

Basically as per the OP we now enter the semi-finals/play-offs stage of the contest:

Once we are down to the final 4 we enter the Play-Offs!
- This will consist of two semi-finals: 1st playing 4th, and 2nd playing 3rd

The winners of the two semi-finals will then compete in the Grand Final with the winner being crowned the 2021 GRcade Master Mario Maker!

I'm just writing up the guidelines now so they'll be posted shortly!

I had considered giving different guidelines to the two sets of semi-final players, but that would mean waiting until the results before people can start making as we don't know the final order of the leaderboard yet.

Yeah I was basically wondering if that was going to be the case. Glad to hear we will get them soon :toot:

Round 8 Guidelines

"If you can't stand the heat then get out of the kitchen!" That's what Chef Toad always used to yell at Mario when he wandered into the wrong areas of the castle again, claiming to be on the hunt for "magic mushrooms". Well Mario heeded that advice but didn't pay much attention to where he went next and it has definitely been a case of 'out of the frying pan and into the fire' as he has only gone and found himself trapped in some fiery hell-scape from which it will take more than psychedelic mushrooms to escape!

That's right we're into the semi-finals of AYAMMM 2021 and things are really starting to heat up! The goal for our final 4 Mario Makers this time is to make a Lava based level! with a specific focus on channelling the feel of classic kids game
"the floor is lava" - we want Mario to really feel the heat and never quite feel like he's standing on safe ground!

The conditions here are that you must use the Castle Theme to allow your level to contain lava (I'll also allow the use of the Forest Night Theme as this turns the water into poison which is essentially the same thing)

In addition you should make heavy use of the various forms of moving/temporary parts for Mario to stand on - we don't want too much solid ground for our plumber to chill out on! Moving lifts, snake blocks, donut blocks, flimsy lifts, enemies you can stand on - they're all fair game to help make a level where Mario feels like he's only ever one step from landing in the lava!

I'm not going to put a limit on the use of actual solid ground in the level as I don't want to be too pedantic about it, but the overall feel should be one of lacking safe spaces in the level to kick back in! For example a large ground platform where you can just stand there and take stock indefinitely = bad, but that same platform where the lava is rising to kill you or a buzzsaw is approaching to slice Mario in two or even where the autoscroll will shove you into the lava if you're not careful - those are all fine! :nod:
