Woke up this morning to find Root and Malan still batting. Had to check we weren’t following on.

And there we are, Root out edging to slips to a ball he should have left.

Malan follows shortly after.

Apart from Root, we're in a terrible rut when it comes to general test-batting technique with our players. We just don't look at all suited to it.

In home conditions we can offset that with our bowling in English conditions and limit the opponents to low-ish scores to compete in test matches, but away form home we're second rate.

England will be following on soon.
Broad has had his jaw rattled off Richardson. Could have been nasty

You couldn't make this gooseberry fool up.

Root got injured (ribs) taking some throwdowns so we've had test stalwart Ollie Robinson bolwing off-spin.

Fantastic effort by Buttler, completely undone by backing onto the stumps. :fp:

So where does England go from here? You'd have to imagine Pope is done for now and YJB will be back in the next test. I can also see Wood returning for whichever one of Anderson or Broad who is creaking the most. But what do they do about the openers? Neither have performed at all but there doesn't seem an alternative in the squad unless they trust Crawley to do it (please no).

Just stick with the same batsmen. There isn't anyone else that actually deserve to come in for them, besides Lawrence, who could come in for Pope. The thing with Pope is he hasn't ever had a long, unbroken run in the team, constantly in and out, because of either injury or because they expect him to replicate his splendid county form at test level.

England are planning to raid the BBL for players.

Whoever did the planning for this tour was majorly out of their depth. Some of the decision-making absolutely beggars belief, including the lack of flexibility in said "planning".

They need someone like me to take up a strategic advisor position because these clowns have no clue what they are doing. They need someone who is not involved in their bubble and not susceptible to groupthink.

Just watching Mike Atherton on the news. He looks drawn and scrawny. Has he got some health issue?

He's had to deal with a spinal arthritis condition most of his adult life, and these things only get worse, so it could be related to that.

Apparently when touring, he could barely walk whenever he got off the plane. He did pretty amazingly to achieve what he did as a batsman.
