I hope you're not telling me they're all racist Drumstick...

I don't think they are.

With regard to Robinson... I am torn on this subject of 'offensive tweets made when young' being used as ammunition later in life because it appears to completely neglect any context. I sympathise to a degree, social media was basically in its infancy when I was in my late teens so this specific situation wouldn't affect me, people of my age (not that I held any offensive views!) or anyone older, and anything anyone says is now etched online forever for anyone to see. This is from like a decade ago and he seems to be in a much better place now, hopefully better educated. I don't think it should tarnish him for the rest of his career, people have to be given some benefit of growth, in his case it seems isolated to one period of his life rather than enduring throughout.

As much as I dislike Vaughan I found myself agreeing with him yesterday. It's mad that the ECB doesn't seem to have checked out Robinson's online presence.

To be serious, I am with you on that. I made some horrendous jokes in my teens that I'd be ashamed of now (I didn't hold any horrendous views either I like to think, but I was a privileged kid and people around me made racist and sensitive jokes like they were going out of fashion, and I joined in). Makes me wonder what's on my old Facebook profile...

No, Rob Key, you do not attempt to "dry up" the runs with a new ball. You attack, encouraging the batsman to try and drive.

Re: Ollie Robinson, I'd have more sympathy if it was in his early teen years but wasn't he 19-20 years old?

I dunno, I was still pretty stupid at 20.

Not racist stupid. But still.

Racist stupid is the problem here though.

Ultimately though I agree with Drummy on the benefit of growth and how it shouldn't tarnish his career forever.

18-19 yeah. Also people mature quicker/slower than others based on so many different factors and we shouldn't assume that everyone was as (im)mature as us when we were young(er). I would be harsher in judgement if this attitude was demonstrated to be sustained throughout his life but it appears to be isolated to a period where he was troubled. That doesn't make it OK at all, but it does mean he probably isn't inherently racist/sexist, therefore should get some benefit of the doubt.

Wood and Robinson have outbowled Broaderson today.

To be honest he seems genuinely contrite on his actions as a young man rather than starting his apology with the excuse of being young and stupid, or framing his apology as only being sorry if anyone was offended.

Yep, his apology struck me as very genuine.

One of the reasons that Me Too, Everyday Sexism, BLM etc exist is to educate people, so there must be space available for people to demonstrate change in their behaviours through learning, otherwise what's the point? I am absolutely certain I have objectified women on this forum in the past, and I looked back at my old posts a while back (after a thread about one of the above movements, I think) and saw that I'd laughed at jokes in one of the bad taste joke threads that make me cringe now. But I, and I think a lot of people, have thought about how we behave in the light of current events over the past few years and have changed how we act. That's what's supposed to happen, and without a path of redemption/rehabilitation for people who have made mistakes there's going to be limited change in society ultimately.

I'll admit to not having seen/heard the apology, but that's not what I've read elsewhere.

Imagine getting a Michelle on debut, on the honours board and being outed as a racist all in just over a day.

I presume we're all agreed that England won't last three sessions?

Sibley I wasn't surprised about, he's been rushed back from injury. Crawley's was poor decision making, far too early in the innings and too much swing on offer for a wafting drive.

On the flip side, Colin de Grandhomme's hair is something to behold.

Some lovely, resolute batting in the end, I'll take it with both hands!

Nicely done at the end but at least one of Sibley and Crawley need a score in the second innings otherwise I think its time for the return of Hameed.
