Jimmy's getting it in the neck now, for this (recently deleted) tweet:

He was but a wee 27 year old boy at the time though.

I'd say the 'looking like a lesbian' stuff has only very recently been viewed as too far - literally just a few years ago Jimmy Carr was telling Rob Beckett he had the hairstyle of a lesbian, on Channel 4 of all places, to uproarious laughter.

It's not like the racial stuff which has been out of bounds for a long, long time now. So I hope Jimmy doesn't get hung, drawn and quartered over that tweet.

That's the problem with viewing stuff from the past and judging it with the lens of today - it strips away the context of what was deemed 'acceptable' at the time and where the individual in question was in their life.

The general approach is too black and white when in actuality there's a lot of grey in there too.

I dunno, those tweets of Robinson's look to run the whole gamut of not acceptable this century from racism to sexism to making jokes about suicide. I'm starting to think he was a absolute arsehole in 2012. I mean everyone is probably a bit of an arsehole at 18 but not to the same extent.

I think Drummy is talking more about the recent stuff that has come out rather than Robinson's

The Anderson one doesn't seem that bad when you consider what was acceptable at the time etc.

He could well have been. He might still be.

These situations are difficult to assess. When someone says that they've learnt from their mistakes, they could mean that they've learnt not to air their horrible views publicly. Or they could mean that their views have changed over time.

Until we can prove that someone is categorically racist/sexist/whatever, they should get some benefit of the doubt IMO. But it's really hard to prove something like that either way unless they slip up again.

I know that if I was in this sort of position where awful views I held in the past didn't reflect my current beliefs, I'd want people to understand that I'd changed for the better.

Apparently Rory Burns and Dom Bess have deleted their social media accounts.

Off topic, but was Sibley's 60* grindathon enough for you to keep his spot? There's an argument to be made that he hadn't batted so steadfastly, England could have collapsed and lost at Lord's.

Yes, both openers did enough in that game to warrant further selection. Juries still out on Crawley though but we're not exactly flush with alternatives and I see no value at all in having Hameed at 3.

I love grindy openers. My possibly unfair belief is that 'stylists' like Crawley and Vince, and even Pope to an extent, need to try less hard to get picked and therefore end up being worse. Gimme a top three of Sibley, Burns, and somebody of the same ilk please. (Not sure who right now...)

My view of Sibley is that he can stay but only on the condition he begins to change his mindset to some degree. Having a defensive mindset as an opener is great, but he's taken it to an extreme. There are times when he doesn't even go after long hops for easy 4's because he seemingly has already decided to have a bunch of dot balls to frustrate the bowler or something.

He needs to stay defensive but treat each delivery on its own merits. He doesn't even attempt to put away the bad balls a lot of the time. He does have shots in his locker though, he just needs to get the balance right.

I do hope the weather is better at Edgbaston than it is here. Currently grey and raining.

Dry in the east mids this morning but very overcast and humid. Perfect day for swing bowling.

Watling and Richardson both out, some big losses there for the Kiwis.

How on Earth has Sibley's jumper got a massive brown stain all down the front before a ball has been bowled?
