I guess it's because I got into cricket after he retired that I'm not as flabbergasted as everybody else seems to be. Gone was the on-field genius, and in its place was a sequence of gibberish, a reputation as a bit of a bogan, and a terrible lifestyle that if I'm honest means I'm not surprised he died at a young age.

To be fair, that was all true when he was an on field genius...

No age to die. 2 years older than me.
One of the best spin bowlers ever.

Ditto - word for word what I’d say as well.

Are you quoting this from somewhere? I haven't heard of Warne being called a bogan(Google brought up a Daily Mail article :dread: ), and that's actually a fairly offensive thing to call an Australian!

He obviously had a few issues with his lifestyle but was still well liked in Australia and 52 is still no age to die. RIP.

What is a bogan? Never heard of it.

Another match, another fail for Lauren Winfield. 5 years and she's never done anything of note at the top of the order, a constant passenger.

Good to see Pakistan making big runs in their first innings and King Fawad is still yet to bat.

It’s an Australian term to describe a classless person, mostly. My wife’s asleep atm so I can’t ask her directly but Google tells me the definition of the word is “an uncultured and unsophisticated person; a boorish and uncouth person.”

Which seems a bit harsh to say about Warne? Like, I dunno that much about the guy beyond him loving a bit of the old Bolivian marching powder and his ads for hair transplants, was he ever involved in genuine controversy? He seems beloved in Australia, they’re all going mental about this. :dread:

I don't think so. He was unfaithful to his wife, but other than that I don't think he ever did anything very controversial.

He was one of the top 5 bowlers ever to have played the game, maybe even the best. And even though he was in a team of world class players in every position, he was still the best. I'd imagine the reaction would be the same here when Botham goes if he'd not gone all Brexity in the last few years.

Warne was named one of Wisden's 5 Cricketers of the Century in 1999 despite only coming onto the international scene in 1993. He won matches for Australia from what ought to be unwinnable situations that no other cricketer could.

His personal life was a mess at times but in terms of the best cricketers of all-time, he slots in alongside Tendulkar, just under Bradman.

Maybe I hadn't appreciated how offensive it was. Apologies to any Australians if I've misjudged that.

I still don't get the outpouring of grief though. Granted, infidelity is a pretty big thing to me, but even outside that he'd always seemed to be a bit of an asshat? I don't dispute that he's one of the greatest cricketers ever, but that doesn't really inspire grief in me. Respect maybe. Maybe it'll be different when I reach 52. :slol: Then again, I've grieved over precisely one death of a person I don't know personally (Iwata).

Also, count me as another person who doesn't understand why Winfield-Hill is still in the England team.
