Of course the moment I raise my doubts about Woakes he takes two in short order. :fp:

Woakes is quality when fit.

Tough chase ahead!

Absolutely ridiculous stuff. Woakes should get MotM for his 4-fer on that pitch.

As long as we don't have our 1 bad game in the knockout rounds then I can't see past England at this point. Or Rashid gets injured. There really isn't a score that we can't chase down. That batting line-up is absolutely frightening (scratch Denly obvs).

So, GRcade: what’s your final squad?

Curran may have played himself in and Willey may have played himself out over that series. I still think having a good leftie in the squad is important, but I struggle to think who I’d include him over in an actual team. Meanwhile goodness knows why Denly is still in consideration as the reserve spinner. The batsmen are easier, but Vince did a Vince again and probably isn’t a 100% pick.

I’d go:

Roy
Jonny
Root
Morgan
Buttler
Stokes
Woakes
Moeen
Curran
Rashid
Jofra

Vince
Dawson
Plunkett
Wood

and bar Denly I think the selectors will too. Willey vs. Plunkett was my biggest query and I’m still not sure I’ve made the right decision.

The only thing I might change from your line up is Plunkett for Curran, but otherwise that's my 15 as well.

Plunkett has simply taken too many wickets in the middle overs to be left out.

Next round of county starts today.

I think your squad looks decent but I'd be surprised to see Dawson in it. He's an obvious cover for a Rashid injury but he hasn't appeared in the warm up games so I don't see England picking him. Therefore expecting to see Denly in there and then a toss up between Plunkett and Willey. Maybe Plunkett is a little too similar to Archer and Wood and therefore Willey offers something a bit different.

We need a backup spinner and Jocular Joe Denly isn't up to scratch. Unless they don't take a back up spinner into the tournament and take Willey.

That’s the alternative, but I think England like having two (proper - sorry Joe) spinners at once. And Denly, for all that he’s a decent utility player, isn’t a proper spinner. In a way it’s been a bit harsh to pick him as one.

Plunkett has been great and even though he’s down on pace he’s still managed to take wickets with cutters and the like, replacing speed with skill like a white ball Jimmy but not as good. That’s why I put him in my squad above. However I’m not sure I’d trust him to bowl at the death like I would Curran. I think the team above has enough middle-over options (two spinners, couple of overs of Joff, Stokes going for 20 off 2 before being pulled from the attack...).

I think if they had another spinner in mind then they'd have played at least one game against Pakistan.

Yeah you don't want Plunkett bowling anywhere near the death. Ideally he bowls his allocation between overs 10-40. You have Curran, Woakes, Archer and Wood to bowl at the death.

Some confusion in the way I put that, sorry - England want two spinners at all times, they have Joe in as one and I agree that they’re likely to keep him. I think that their dual-spin approach has worked and I agree on that, but would prefer to see Dawson. But likely won’t.

I agree on Dawson, he's a much better option than Denly if Rashid picks up an injury. But I wonder if the rather limited squad of 15 means having a specialist spinner in just as injury cover isn't a good idea.

You mean, have Joe in as a batsman as well? I’m not quite au fait with his recent performance, which I think is meant to be pretty good in List A; but I know he’s been mediocre in the First Division of the CC, and he hasn’t set the world on fire with his batting in this series just gone. As in, he’s been worse than James Vince doing James Vince things. Add in Dawson being more than decent with the bat and I’m not sure how much batting power you’d actually lose there.

I'd leave out Denly, and keep all the seamers. If Rashid does get injured, neither Denly or Dawson are a sufficient replacement so may as well chance it, and just pick the single spinner. It's not like any of the pitches are going to be raging turners anyway, so as long as Adil and Moeen stay fit it should be fine.
