He obviously didn't feel or hear any contact with the bat.

Good platform... don't want to put the legendary GRmockers on so I'll stop there.

Isn't Archer a better batsman than Rashid?

The way they approached the inning changed completely, so I'm hoping the pitch just isn't as suited to batting as it was (other than the inevitable new ball period).

Michael Vaughan Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

If England win the next two tosses then I think they will win the World Cup.
If they are in a chase I doubt whether they can play the right intelligent cricket under pressure of a chase.
Can they win four tosses on the trot? Of course you can.

This is a sad state of cricket. This is probably true. Does anyone have any stats about one day cricket batting first / winning?

I think that's Vaughan trying another reverse psychology on the team after the 'success' of his Bairstow comments.

It is true though. If it were just the stress of chasing that'd be one thing, but frankly global tournaments shouldn't be played on pitches like this that slow up quite so much in the second innings. Not so much you can do about the weather, of course...

As this is an ICC tournament, it's the ICC's responsibility to curate the pitches and that is what has been driving the 'bat first and win' results we're seeing.

In regular ODI series, the pitches are curated by the home team's cricket board, which are generally tailored to assist the home team.

The opposite is true apparently?

In normal bilateral series, teams have preferred to chase since the last World Cup. It's simply an easier task because you have a target to aim for, whereas batting first and trying to figure out what a good score is for the pitch you're batting on is difficult. The trade off for the team batting second is accepting the pitch may become worse to bat on throughout the day. We are seeing an extreme version of this throughout this tournament.

31/1 isn’t bad against the new ball. Give the bowlers the first hour, then bat deep, bat long, and bowl them out on days four and five.

They only need about 400 runs off the next 40 overs.
