Hot on the heels of the "How many copies of GTA V do you own?" thread - which has got so many GRcadians checking through their game collections - it's time to delve deeper into the world of Grand Theft Auto.

Which GTA games are the best ones in the series?

Yep, this is it. Still harbouring fond memories of the first game? Were you mesmerised by jumping into three dimensions in III? Or maybe V Online is still one of your most enjoyable pastimes?

Yeah, for the sheer style and the music I'd pick Vice City as my fave. I also enjoyed GTA III (the arrival of 3D really was astounding at the time) and the huge, detailed environments in V remain super-impressive, too.

Vice City is my favourite. It had the best combination of style, soundtrack, characters, cars, and city.
GTA III is next, as it was pretty much what I'd dreamt of from the series and was a groundbreaking title.

Of the others I've played/owned (GTA, GTA 2, San Andreas, IV) they're all about the same level for me - less enjoyable than III or Vice City, but still good. Went for the original in the poll.

Vice City and San Andreas are out well in the front for me. Hard to pick between these two as my favourite.

Vice City > San Andreas = GTA:V

Obviously it's GTA V as the first game of the series I completed, but a close second comes Vice City Stories for it's empire building and the Miami setting - which I enjoyed exploring a lot of. We've seen Liberty City and San Andreas (sort of) in HD, and so it's time for Vice City to come in the future. And it will be amazing. I could put GTA IV as a third favourite, but I really hate those driving physics.

San Andreas is the best because its a massive jump from GTA3 and its expansion pack GTA:VC
the only rubbish thing they added was the flying missions :dread:

Blimey, I don't recall that song being in the game. I will have to dig out the disc and give it another go sometime!

Vice City all the way! Much preferred the setting to San Andreas.

GTAV was a great technical achievement but I just didn't seem to be able to have a lot of fun with it.

Vice City, San Andreas, and V for me.

GTA4 was shite.

I think people look at Vice City with rose tinted glasses a little bit, not massively so but...a little. The voice cast, the soundtrack, the sense of place were all revolutionary, but I think San An tops it because it’s just much better to PLAY as a game.
See I say that, but then I remember having to go to the gym in the first couple of hours of SA, and/or having to go to a fast food place to get health back.

GTA3 is still my favourite, they absolutely nailed it with that game.

Vice City was a good "themed" follow up but the city itself was not as well designed or fun to explore and I've never been as huge a fan of the vibe it was going for as everyone else seems to be. For everything San Andreas did well to expand the formula it also diminished it with a space that was too big and ideas that were too much for the tech.

San Andreas is the best one followed closely by Saints Row 2.

San Andreas is the best overall, but nothing will ever top GTA 3 for how mind blowing that game was. I knew nothing of it prior to seeing a single spread review in a ps2 magazine which had a handful of screenshots and just said it was really good. Did a crap job of selling just how good it was, but having played the first on pc a lot, I was intrigued enough to go and buy it.

Holy gooseberry fool, within minutes of starting it I was just blown away. I played it so much, god only knows how many hours I put in to that game.

Yeah, 4 had its issues, but the DLC content was great

I played GTA3 every day from when I got it until Vice City came out and everyone at college was talking about it constantly the whole time. I genuinely don't think I've experienced anything like it since in terms of completely dominating not just my own time and affections but seemingly everyone else's I knew who was into gaming.

It basically killed the DVD drive in my first PS2 from the constant streaming from the disc! :lol:

or listening too Runnin Down A Dream while in a car chase or just crusin down the highway between cities

It will always be San Andreas for me.

It holds the most nostalgic value, as at the time I was gaming (and getting stoned) alot, and was always looking to come back from work, lock myself in my room and just wander around the map doing random stuff.

I also rate the way they pushed the ps2 in its last moments to actually run the thing decently which for the ps2 was a huge achievement.

GTA nad GTAIII for the nostalgic value, and because they are the games that started it all
