If you want historical accuracy, then you should avoid the word "Viking". There was no such thing.

As for darker skinned people. The Danes and Norsemen were famous for travelling the world. They would intermingle with other cultures, exploring, raiding, enslaving, intermarrying, etc etc.

It's hardly beyond belief that they'd have Black/Asian/mixed race people amongst their number. They are extremely unlikely to have been the Stormfront "White is right" wankers that love "Viking" culture today.

Sigh. As I stated before, one part of the original hook was the time-travel angle and ability to revisit history as it was. Naturally, you need to incorporate a whole wrap of sci-fi and fantastical nonsense to justify that. Previously, all of that nonsense was narrative loops through you could experience history, albeit pop history (eg. the take on Da Vinci in AC2).

If you're not interested in how the Vikings looked, acted or arranged society, then they become little more than a character swap rather than a new perspective. For example, I love reading about Aztec culture and I think that would be a fantastic setting for a future AC title, but I'd love to see experts guiding that characterisation, rather than 'well, this is the 2020 societal ideal and we'll swap these character models and give them different outfits'.

White Supremacists Have Weaponized an Imaginary Viking Past. It's Time to Reclaim the Real History

The term “Viking” possibly comes from the Old Norse word víkingr (sea warrior). As Stefan Brink and Neil Price’s The Viking World describes, historically, it referred to seafaring groups who traversed the seas, oceans and rivers to raid, trade and colonize around the 10th and 11th centuries. They established settler colonies across the Mediterranean, Caspian, Black, Arctic and North Atlantic seas and waterways, maintaining a presence in regions ranging from present-day Russia and Europe to the Americas. Crucially, they were not homogeneous seafarers as is often imagined; they were multicultural and multiracial. But until recently, scholarly discussions of the Vikings in relation to race and a Global Middle Ages had been sidelined.

The whole article is worth reading, as it essentially recounts how modern alt-right white supremacists justify actual massacres with exactly the same reasoning speedboatchase is using here. So maybe, before going down a racist dogwhistle path and using actual white supremacist rhetoric, actually strawberry floating read something about the thing you're commenting on?

I 100% agree. Who gives a gooseberry fool!

But, to those that give a gooseberry fool, maybe study some history before crying about nasty dark skinned people being in your game.

Please calm down, dear. I would never justify a massacre, I don't have racism in my heart, I'm not trying to trick people with secret tactics.

You believe that Ubisoft was intentionally going down a historically accurate path, one divergent from what is normally understood about the Vikings. Fair enough and my contention was that it's a more idealised (socially) depiction. We can disagree on the depiction.

This is completely rewriting your argument. You were attempting to state that the game was somehow lesser due to the inclusion of non-white races by claiming it wasn't historically accurate. You were utterly wrong on all counts, and used a rhetoric in common with alt-right shitlords. Your first impression was one that was systemically racist whether intentional or not

Sorry chum.

I get it. I am bad man with wrong opinion.

My point was that in general, AC has went from more historically accurate (albeit pop history) depictions of society in titles to a more inclusive, idealistic versions of respective historical societies that is more in keeping with modern norms for recent titles. You believe that this interpretation is wrong and you have a link (thank you for the link). Either you're right and this is how it was, or I'm right and this is a concerted effort to bring more inclusivity to history to ensure players feel welcomed (obviously not a bad thing, but a departure imo from the previous series outlook). I don't think there's much more we can say to each other, but I'm sure you'll take the opportunity to imply I'm a racist again, so enjoy.

Do you want historically accurate AC, or pop history AC? Because the two things are not the same.

Do we know the story of AC:Valhalla yet? The background of the characters? Is the setting just Northern Europe, the whole of Europe or does it take in more of the world?

What leads you to believe that it's not historically accurate or even pop history accurate?

Even if it's historically inaccurate (which it isn't), who cares if it makes people feel represented in the game?

Genuinely don't understand what you mean by this if you're referring to Origins and Odyssey?

From the beginning the animus and sci-fi "living through memories" was used as a (really smart) way of excusing anachronisms and anything that wasn't historically accurate. The very premise of the series has historical inaccuracy built in.

And that's why it'll be okay when horned helmets are in this game

I just hope they show Luton as the glittering metropolis it was back in Viking days.
It was like Rome but 10 times better.
