Whats the difference between a 'next gen' version and a current gen performance upscale?

Think PS4 and PS4 Pro, the game is upgraded, sometimes it has more options (60fps mode perhaps) like it's the same as that. :?

Could be anything e.g. the PS4 version might be upscaled when played on PS5 (hence "upgraded") but the PS5 version has an actual higher native resolution.

I wonder if on the PlayStation versions they're just going to print the PS4/5 covers on either side.

Native resolutions are a thing of the past these days. I mean, Fable 2/Knights of the old Republic run at a 'native' 4K on my Xbox One X so I'm really confused what the difference is between upscaled and next gen. Like, you'll have the best version of Valhalla on PS5/Series X in terms of resolution and performance plus several other benefits. I can't talk about PS4 Pro but Xbox One X's upgrades to One S already do this, Hitman/Gears 5 offer higher resolution and 60fps and graphical upgrades in lighting and textures. Sea of Thieves for One X is twice the size of Base One S because it has 4K Textures but none of these game are next gen obviously...

TL:DR Valhalla won't be just an upscaled game.

Yes all of those things could potentially be different between an upgraded current gen version and a next gen version.

(I don't think they will be, I think you'll literally just get upgraded to the next gen version and the matching price supports that, but the question is "has that been confirmed" and I don't know if it has)

Again, I don't know but the way Xbox Presented it and it's smart delivery malarky wasn't just a bump in resolution....

Cyberpunk is not getting an upgrade, it will hit 4K on Series X at launch but that's it. Next year they'll add in all the extra bells and whistles for an actual next gen version.

I hope to get this for xbox from boomerang as a test for the Series X.
I thought the last game looked great on the One X so I have high hopes for this :D .

From a pure graphics point of view I will kind of miss the spectacle of ancient Egypt though as it made for some stunning locations.

Having recently finished Ghost of Tsushima, it does seem weird looking at this where you're effectively playing as the invading Mongols.

Could be interesting if they do something with the morals of what you're doing, like they did in Ghosts. Hard to feel you're playing as the 'good guy' when you're the invader, raiding and burning villages down. Either that or they ignore it because it's a game where the English are bad and Vikings are cool.

Going by the trailer it looks like this tbh.

Still looks like one to get when it goes cheap enough and just blitz through the story as it does look alright. Graphically speaking this and Cyberpunk should be the early pacesetters for next gen for third party games at least.

The anglo-saxons are catholics, and this is Assassin's Creed, where the head of the catholic church will fist fight anyone who tries to break into the secret underground vatican basement to stop them unveiling the ancient alien apple tech that built civilisation and that now the templars want to control so that they can turn the world into a fascist dystopia (I think the timeline where the Templars win is how the franchise ties into the Tom Clancy-verse).

So just remember when you're burning down wessex farmsteads you're actually struggling for freedom and liberty.

Ubisoft's default option for Assassin's Creed Valhalla will see you play as both male and female versions of main character Eivor at different points in the story.

Narrative director Darby McDevitt previously said the game supported both male and female versions as canon, with a full explanation to follow. Well, this is the explanation.

When Valhalla begins, you'll be able to choose to play entirely as female Eivor, entirely as male Eivor, or by default via a "Let the Animus decide" option, as revealed last night in a video clip from IGN. You can then repick from any of these options at any time.

Maybe Eivor is remembered as different genders at different times because he/she is trans?
