I got a bit watery eyed at the 'Assemble!' bit and the female supers being the only ones able to handle Thanos was a real 'strawberry float yeah!' moment but apart from that it was a surprisingly messy affair. Fewer laughs than the other films, and none of the time travel stuff made any sense at all.

Edit: Wow at people seeing this twice or even three times at the cinema. I genuinely don't think I could stomach it.

Have to agree with this. Whilst watching it I loved it, was completely caught up in it all. Thinking about it afterwards and re-watching it made me realise it's a mess of a film and utterly ridiculous at points, expecting people to believe certain plot points just because. There are so many parts of the film that on the re-watch had me going how would that happen or landing on the utterly ridiculous (Ant-Man returning is just one that in hindsight and on a second watch is just ridiculous and would probably be slated in most other films).

Again I agree it's a 7 out of 10 and nowhere near as good as Infinity War, but still an enjoyable film, but one that gets worse on repeated viewings. Reminds me a bit of The Dark Knight Rises, which I adored on the first watch and then had the same issues when re-watching. It'd be interesting to see if peoples opinions on the film change over time as people give it repeated watches and aren't as caught up in the moment.

That's literally the point of the film though. There is absolutely no reason for the film's existence when you take away the 20-odd films that came before it. Nostalgia and familiarity isn't a weakness of the film's script, it's the complete raison d'être. Judged in isolation the film is rightly rubbish, but that's because you should never do that. It's like watching Back to the Future Part II and complaining about them revisiting scenes from the first film (an apt comparison when that is almost literally what happens in in Endgame also).

I also don't get people thinking Infinity War was the better film, I think that was the 7/10 film and Endgame is easily better as it concludes the whole saga.

I enjoyed Infinity more as it was a better spectacle, particularly the entire third act in Wakanda, and because of the “shock” ending which is probably something I’ll never experience live in a cinema ever again.

Endgame had the better character moments though.

I'm not saying either factor is bad on its own, I'm just saying it relies on them in a way Infinity War didn't because the script is so all over the place. As someone less invested in the MCU than many on here, but also as someone who has seen most of the Marvel movies (oh god) I was taken out of the experience by the film's bizarre logic loops and nonsensical plot devices in a way I never was with IW and the only reason I was sucked back in was that sense of familiarity. At least BTTF2 had that consistency.

Nostalgia was always going to be a part of this film, I just don't think it should have been the glue literally holding the thing together.

Why though? That's the whole point of the film, it's the payoff for 10 years and 20 films+ of build up. It was a film for everyone fully invested in the Universe. I just don't see why they shouldn't make a film like that. Yes, it doesn't hold up as a standalone film but I don't see why every film has to.

Speaking personally, like I say the slapdash waving away of internal consistency took me out of the moment and made for a less enjoyable film.

It is obvious that they knew these lapses would be largely ignored due to the vein of celebration running through the thing, but viewing the film critically as a piece of cinema this decision, I believe, led to an inferior product.

Not a bad one, just not as solid as it's predecessor.

Fair enough Taf, although...

I'm pretty sure Infinity War has more than its fair share of logical inconsistencies anyway

The time travel stuff of Endgame was nonsensical, but then so is pretty much every part of every MCU film. I think it's partly why I prefer the full magical fantasy comedy sci-fi of Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor Ragnarok, because at that point it's so far removed from real life and almost irrelevant if something makes sense or not.

Endgame's time shenanigans lead to some pretty frosty fridge logic, but then Infinity War's entire premise with Thanos and his plan is dumb from the beginning, and the snap led to some strange logic holes of its own. The failed attempt at removing the gauntlet from Thanos and the end battle at Wakanda (something Endgame basically repeated) are as big offenders to me as anything in Endgame.

The whole point of this timeline is that it's the one time in 14 million timelines that they Kill Thanos and bring everyone back. There could be a bunch of other timelines where Scott never gets lucky and never escapes the Quantunm Realm.

Saying "that would never happen" kind of defeats the entire point of the story, that being: everything had to be perfect for them to beat him.

Just saw it and I think I preferred it to Infinity War. Yeah there were some logical inconsistencies like they could just timetravel back and go grab Tony, but honestly the whole thing is based on comics and in comics nothing makes sense anway so it's fine!

It's insane that we've come to the point where that's preferable to just deciding on a design earlier and making the damn things.

If Jeremy Renner has a mo-cap hat, does that mean his hair was also CGI?

Surely it's got to be cheaper and easier to just...make some white suits?
