Yeah yeah, nostalgia's good and all, but the real test of a great retro game is if it's still fun today. Taking off the 'new' sheen of a title can be revealing; behind once-stunning production values, can the game still shine through?

So let's go on about gems we've played years after their release that still managed to entice and charm the pants off us. Gogogo!

I'll start:

Scrolling shooters in general are something I discovered late (apart from a brief memory of playing Biohazard Battle over a friend's house), but this remains my favourite. A £7 treat in an indie shop usually full of sports games no one wants any more, this is honestly one of my favourite games for the almighty Mega Drive, and I didn't even grow up with it! Level design's inventive, enemies are creative and challenging, and the music...sweet God the music! I've gone through the trouble of converting weird sound files to get it in my iTunes library. That's the ultimate sign of nerdom lovin' I can supply to a game \o/

Samples of my favourite tracks:

Oh man, Thunder Force IV is such an amazing game  Have you played V on Saturn or PSone? It's good, but no where as good as IV.

I'll have to think if any games I played where years after release, with me being old and everything :shifty:

Pilotwings 64. I played it last year, having foolishly avoided it at the time of release. I was absolutely astounded at what the N64 could pull off with regard to draw-distance. Considering the title was released so early into the machine's lifespan, that game was one impressive feat. I cannot fathom why some sources scored it as low as they did; the game is simply spell-binding.

All 3 Donkey Kong Country games (1 and 3 on my SNES which I bought around 2000 or so and 2 on the Virtual Console).

The Legend of Zelda - when it was re-released as a NES classic on the GBA.

Chrono Trigger and Super Metroid. Both were fan-fucking-tastic.

Musha and Gley Lancer and the next best shooters. PC Engine on VC has way more great shooters. There is a compilation on PSP(Japanese import) which has loads of great ones on too.

I've just got my hands on Metroid: Zero Mission. It is a tremendous bit of software--absolutely delectable, and a game that makes me wish I'd been more adventurous with GBA software at the time.

I played Super Mario World properly a good few years on the GBA after it was released on the SNES, but then I never owned a SNES. I guess the same goes for Yoshi's Island and the original Pilotwings, which I only just recently downloaded on the Virtual Console.

Buying a Nintendo Metroid game is hardly the height of adventure.

The Soul Reaver series - absolutely awesome! A sprawling, verbose and gloriously gothy and pretentious time-travel dark fantasy series with lots of DENSE PROSE between Raziel and Kain about existentialism, fate etc. Wish they'd finished the series off rather than leaving a cliffhangar....

Earthbound - played it via emulator last year, one of the best RPGs I've ever played.

Ristar, quirky platformer shame SEGA never made a sequel.
