Asda had some clearance deals when I was in there earlier and after checking, it seems like it may be a nationwide thing.

When fairly recent games on the X1, PS4 or PC, go for around £20, I'm left wondering how Nintendo "get away" with this commercially? They make some fantastic games, but I find these prices prohibitive. Anyway, sorry to go off topic.

OK, so how do any of them get away with this on Switch? The game you highlighted is around £12 on X1 and PS4. Apologies, this maybe a strange, or controversial view, I'm just somewhat confused about why the market accepts it.

At least Nintendo don't charge £50 for ports of old games.

Nintendo games keep selling, that's why they don't drop in price. Nintendo also keep a tighter grip on supply to make sure the market isn't flooded.

It's just supply and demand.

One factor (it's not the only factor) is that Nintendo demand price-parity between physical and digital. That is, if you release a game physically, the retail price must match the price on the digital storefront. This is done to keep physical retailers on side because they are still very important for selling actual hardware.

Switch cartridges are notably more expensive to produce than discs, especially for larger size carts. This has two effects - publishers cheap out on cart size and only include half the game with the rest a mandatory download, and the physical price goes up. If the physical price goes up, the digital price goes up.

This establishes a precedent on the store for games to cost more in general, so it becomes normal even for digital only games.

There absolutely are substantial discounts to be found in sales on the Switch eshop though. They happen less with Nintendo published games, but that's a different thing altogether!
