You need to switch in and out of top gear on curves/straights to indeed get anywhere past the first checkpoint.

It's super hard.

Either my old man gaming skills are atrophying or the Switch version of Outrun is significantly harder than earlier versions. First time I played I barely got past the first checkpoint, pretty certain I got to the final stage on the 3ds version on my first go. Seems to run so much faster.

Is cookshop.co.uk any good? They have Resident Evil Origins on Xbox one for fifteen bucks but I haven't used the site nor have heard of it before.

edit: oof upon further searching I'm staying away

Re Outrun, I have no idea what is / where to select High Gear

I play on default settings, adjusted down to Easy and time increased to max on Automatic. Is there another button I should be using or setting (eg Manual)?

On 3ds I think it's one of the shoulder buttons? Maybe same on switch.

I don't think there is a manual/auto mode because there's literally only two gears, low and hi.

You could look at the digital manual.

Edit: I can't believe it's this simple but you should use the d pad and down is shift up and up is shift down, just like a real gearstick. You can also change the control scheme I think.

Of course in the arcade there was just a wheel, accel/brake pedals and a gearstick. I think the steering is analogue as well in this version.

You need to accelerate to max speed on low gear before shifting to top gear. If you crash or loose speed for any reason such as a tight corner you need to shift down again. Managing low/hi and staying on track is pretty much the game because the checkpoints are unforgiving.

I've got to get 5,000,000 points in Outrun and Super Hang-On in Yakuza 0 for the completion points. I don't see it happening any time soon!

I've managed to hit 4,700,000 once before, but it was a bloody struggle! :dread:

Add me to the list of people who can’t get to the first checkpoint in SEGA AGES: Outrun :slol: it’s bloody hard!

To stay on topic, Amazon have Diablo 3 on Nintendo Switch for £30.99 at the moment

It might also be that it now runs in 60fps so you have less time to react. There might be an "arcade mode" which runs at the original 30fps that's a bit easier.

Hmmm, I think I remember seeing an option in the menus that allow you to switch between newer and older versions. It sure is this is just a graphical change or if it also changes the FPS though

I was tempted to grab Outrun but having seen the previous comments it'd probably just be an exercise in frustration!

I must admit that they've put me off, too. Thing is, I remember getting through the first couple of stages back in the day... even with my "gaming skills". Just how bad are these guys? :dread: .

Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer* for 3DS is £9.99 at Amazon. Sixty-minute makeover.

* This isn't mainstream AC; it's all about arranging furniture. I like it, though :-).

Times have changed, Jawa. It's all about twitch reflexs these days where it was about level and muscle memory back in your day.

Anyone considering getting Outrun should just grab a copy of Coast 2 Coast on Xbox, PS2 or PSP for probably less money and a better experience.

If you have that option you are better off with the original Xbox version of OutRun 2.

Not sure why? C2C contains a port of 2SP as well as all of the C2C content.

The mission mode in OutRun 2 was better than anything in C2C, I also don't think the bonus stages were in C2C. And they are awesome.

EDIT - I've got a feeling that OutRun 2 was also better looking than Coast to Coast.
