Just what everyone needs, yet another streaming service to subscribe to. Also, look forward to having BBC content stripped from Netflix, put on shitbox and then you have to pay for it on top of your licence fee. Also, povvo ITV content mixed in.

BRITBOX

Rarely watch BBC these days and ITV now has zero content I'd watch, so I'm out.

The BBC really ought to have all of it’s programmes available on iPlayer for free. We’ve already paid for them, we shouldn’t have to pay again.

And Britbox is a terrible name.

We need more pay-monthly TV / streaming broadcasters!

Said nobody ever.

Dang it, I've only just joined the twenty-first century by using Netflix and I don't want that to be diluted :x .

Edit: Britbox USA / Canada has 500k subscribers :o .

The BBC, home to crime drama Luther, and ITV, maker of Love Island and I'm A Celebrity, are in the "concluding phase of talks" to create a rival to Netflix.

The BBC's director general Tony Hall said the aim was to launch the "BritBox" rival to Netflix in the UK the second half of 2019.

The announcement came as ITV reported 2018 profits of £567m, up 13%.

ITV's chief executive Dame Carolyn McCall said it was an "uncertain economic and political environment".

She said the "BritBox" rival to Netflix will be the home for the "best of British creativity".

Neither organisation would say how the services would be priced, but Lord Hall said it would be "competitive".

There are reports it could cost £5 a month.

The two organisations already have a BritBox streaming service in North America which Lord Hall said was "ahead of expectations".

"Research with the British public shows that there is a real appetite for a new British streaming service - in addition to their current subscriptions," he said.

Dame Carolyn told BBC Radio 4's Today Programme that 43% of all homes which use the Internet are interested in a subscription. For homes which already subscribe to Netflix, she said that increased to half of all homes.

ITV will spend £25m on the venture this year and £40m in 2020.

I love that opening line. "We make Luther - those dicks make Love Island!"

All of this fracturing of content will just lead to a rise in piracy again. Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney Life, Now TV, Britbox, the stuff you want is spread across too many places so people will pay for 1 and just pirate the rest.

One man should not have this much power in this game. Luckily I'm not an ordinary man.

Why would you pay for this on top of the licence fee and iplayer?

I guess the answer is you wouldn't, but plenty of people don't pay the licence fee already

If they charge like £5 a month for it and have literally everything the BBC have ever produced available then maybe I would go for it.

But it's more likely to cost way too much and only contain episodes of Bargain Hunt and Loose Women. And it will constantly buffer.

Don't forget ITV, who'll chip in with all their ITVbe content.

It will just show things from the 50s. When Britain was still great and we didn’t have any of those funny tinged people here.
