xCloud all over Instagram as well could be pretty big in future. Maybe Whatsapp too down the line, who knows.

This was always on the cards when you compared livestream viewership across the platforms although I thought Microsoft would let it drag on for another couple of years, I guess closing shop any later and it could have tarnished the Xbox brand. I think the pattern is that when Microsoft tries to launch a competitor to the market leader, eg Zune, Windows Phone, Surface RT it faces an insurmountable challenge to fight an established product. But when it buys an already successful platform, LinkedIn, Minecraft, it works out better.

Ninja must be laughing at his pay day! I suspect he will want to return to Twitch as its where he started and he needs to stream to work. But now that Mixer is dead, Twitch and YouTube Gaming wont be in a rush to make him an offer as he needs them more than they need him.

Pretty much everything about monied game streaming makes me want to spew.

How on earth does streaming yourself playing a videogame make so much money? And why would I want to spend hours watching someone else playing a videogame I could be playing myself? IT MAKES NO SENSE!

Well, like, it's more than just watching a video game being played. Some streamers are genuinely hilarious and others branch into politics and such too.

For my perspective, it is a lot more relaxing to watch someone else play certain games. I can also get an idea of what some game play like. There's the community side to it as well, even if that is being a complete and utter waste of oxygen. And that is just it really. You can, with a lot of time and effort (and money I suppose), create something that will appeal to a lot of people, so of whom will subscribe or donate. If you get big enough, maybe companies will sponsor you, just like they sponsor anyone else who has a large following. I don't see why it would be any different to other forms of entertainment. Why would I spend £20 to go watch Birmingham City when I could go watch Stourbridge for £5, or even go to the park and play myself.

They create para-social relationship structures with their audience who feel a sense of connection with these people, despite them being entirely separate and unknown. They act like friends to people in exchange for money and an impression of community. This is accelerated by corporate sponsorship/marketing who see them as a new vector to sell stuff to an audience who are increasingly immune to conventional advertising. As much as I don't want to link everything to Guy Debord, but it really is The Society of the Spectacle in action:

This word is something that irks me about streaming as well. They're not charities, so why are they called donations? You're paying someone for providing an entertainment service, not feeding the poor.

Good point, I've never thought about that. Perhaps they associate tips with adult webcams, which to be honest is what some of these streams tend towards...
