If your method of relaxation is legal then you should obviously be able to do what the hell you like. If it's illegal then that's a matter for the police. Who who work for (unless it's the police!) shouldn't really enter into it.

EDIT: And as a side-note a chunk of things which are currently deemed illegal (such as substances that are no more harmful to you than alcohol) should be up for re-assessment.

That said, self medication is usually a shaky route to go down and you might be better off getting something officially prescribed - but to be fair it sounds like you have tried that route without success so that's tough to hear

For sure. It's dystopian. Corporations shouldn't have control over how you relax at home.

Where I work required a mandatory drug test as part of the induction process, but it was made clear before applying that I'd have to take one.

Still unethical IMO. Maybe you like to smoke weed at the weekends, who cares? It's none of anyone else's business. Shouldn't affect which jobs you can apply for.

Maybe, but it's an area where we're around dangerous equipment, so I suppose it's to see if someone is going to rock up to work with trace of drugs it their system, go in the lab and then electrocute someone.

I can see the point for jobs that would be dangerous for an intoxicated person to carry out. Drivers, heavy machinery etc.

But other than that, it's none of their business.

Ah right, I didn't realise you work with dangerous equipment Ad7. That's potentially bit different (as Rocsteady also said) if it's specifically for health and safety.

It's an office, with a lab and a shop floor with manufacturing, so it has to cover all that. I've only had the one test (try pissing on command when you get stage fright), but I think shop floor people get tested more often. If I was in to smoking the odd doobie (is that what the kids still call them?) On the weekend, then I could see it being annoying.

It's dystopian for all drugs but testing for weed is the worst in my eyes as it hangs around for so long. Couple of joints on a Friday evening and you can easily pop for it on the Monday morning. Heavy Sunday night session at the pub and you're good to go though! Completely ridiculous.

I know what you mean, but people shouldn't be drinking anyway on a night before work.

I'm emmigrating to a weed legal state but if weed shows up in my blood test that I need to take as part of the green card process I will be refused.

I've heard the mouth swab tests can be beaten quite easily with the teeth brushing and mouthwash method. All the best!

Codiene based pain meds will show up as opiates so even an over the counter co-codamol will justify that and diazepam (commonly given low dose for anxiety) will cover benzos. Both are justified so I'd just go in and tell them you take prescription medication. If they ask for proof, then you might need to worry.

I have had a recent prescription for codeine sulphate for back pain(genuine) and I got a short course of diazapam about 4 months ago when I was having an incredibly hard time so I can say I still had some left and popped a few to help with job interview nerves(which again is true). I can only ask the doctor for a note to back me up,that surely wouldn't be a problem. As I say, I only take small amounts when I need it, I don't do it to get smashed.

It sounds like the best thing to do would be to get a doctor's letter, then be up front with them before you take the test.

Its the attitude that all drug users are somehow 'bad' people that I find ridiculous.

I personally have never used drugs (or even been drunk) but would never judge someone for recreational drug use, that's their business not mine and employers shouldn't be able to deny jobs based on what someone does in their own time.

What happens in-between shifts, I don't care. As long as you function at work fine. I work with folks who I know take coke and eccies at the weekend. Much rather someone who's happy and had a blast on their weekend off than someone turning up hungover. Drugs aren't the worst thing. You might also be a mad gambler or get hookers. Who strawberry floating cares. If you're fit for work I don't give a gooseberry fool what your vice is.

Just don't wear your weed stinking hoodie to handover..

Drug testing in the workplace is a strawberry floatin disgrace. It's not even a test to detect drugs in the system - it's to detect the metabolites of those drugs, which can stay in the body for weeks. It doesnt tell you if the person is intoxicated, it tells you they have taken a certain illegal (or prescription) drug in the past few weeks. Therefore it's simply an invasion of privacy and a means to control.

I think it's a corporations way of limiting claims or responsibility if workplace accidents happen. Test the person involved in the accident and you can legally drop resposibility if it's a positive test, even though that person hasnt touched the drug for 2 months.

I decided against taking the job anyway. They were being dicks demanding that I start this coming Monday even though I told the interviewer that I had to give 2 weeks notice to my current employers.
