I could understand Chris Hoy receiving an honour since he's now become the second most successful British Olympic athlete and won three golds, but anyone else receiving any kind of honour is just silly.

Adlington's friend telling the Queen she should be a Dame was cringeworthy.

They're re-using that Morrisons ad music. I wouldn't be surprised if they went for the M&S tune next.

She shouldn't be a dame for the simple fact that she is so fooking ugly.

This is the concensus of what my chinese friends ( back in their motherland) think about the closing ceremony.

dont expect much form londons olympics after seeings its part in the closing ceremony

While i think its true in that the "wow" of seeing serveal thousnd people co-ordinated is not within our grasp, and our volutneers will be rude and agressive. I think their will be more olympic fever throughout the city and not just at the venues. Cant really see how that will make up for lack for grandeur but we'll see.

That was the style of the Beijing games though - everything had to be bigger and grander than what had come before it. As a result, isn't in by far the most expensive games ever?

London doesn't need that, and won't spend it. What I'd prefer (and what the organisers say they're aiming for) would be to make the olympic venues, y'know, useful after the games are over, rather than just a costly white elephant. China, in a way, had something to prove. It was like a desperate first date at time, simply throwing money at everything in order to impress.

Besides, London probably won't need a lot of the stuff the Chinese built as new for 2008. They've already said the Olympic stadium will only be have around 30,000 seats, as the capital doesn't need another 90k-er, as we've got Wembley.

I thought our Olympic stadium would be 50k seater, with temporary seats to boost that for the games. Which i thought was pretty clever. I'm probably one of the only people who care about our country "saving face" or whatever im still very proud im British i want to show the world we've still got it, so im all for legacy games, but i'd like *some* spectale as well.

Personally I'd like to see a 1908 theme to our Olympic games, as a sort of reference back to our historical relevance to the games.

(Plus, it'd be a bit steampunky. Everyone loves steampunk, right? Right?)

You do realise Michael Johnson left the US coverage (or never bothered with it in the first place) because it is unashamedly gooseberry fool? My friend who was in USA at the beginning of the Olympics basically said that all they do is show you the Americans in each event and focus only on them. They don't bother telling you about any other athletes, I think if you are lucky you get the line up.

Our coverage focuses on the Brits (why wouldn't we) but also the other major athletes, if we were going to go through every fecking US medal it would take up a ridiculous amount of time, and why should we? In fact, we give Americans more than enough coverage, way more than even china who were the team that did the best this year.

Also, Michael Johnson seemed to be allowed to talk about what he wanted after all the track finals as far as I could tell.

The end is bittersweet... I loved watching the games, but at least my days will no longer be crippled by the bloody television. I mean, I'd turn it on whilst eating my breakfast and find myself eating dinner by the time I'd decided to turn it off. It's a conspiracy.

Beijing - colourful and beautiful celebration of thousands of years of history.

London - a girl from X-Factor and David Beckham kicking a football off the top of a bus, surounded by a gang of hoodies rolling around on the floor.

:fp:

I guess that really puts British 'culture' into perspective.

What did you expect in 8 minutes? We could hardly have had a massive list of great British inventors or a short lesson in British history. All you can do is give a glimpse of what the flavour of our Olympics will be and seeing as it will be a different games than the Chinese games I feel the segment was about all that could be expected.

I appreciate that it was only a short period and limited showing, but that doesn't change the fact that they made terrible decisions. They put up a reality TV star, a past it footballer and an old rocker on top of a bus and then go on about how it showed how 2012 would be all about youth and looking to the future. B*****s it did! The UK actually has a lot of history and achievement yet they seemed to ignore all that and just opt for shitty celebrity culture.
