I agree that Phelps shouldn't be considered 'the greatest Olympian ever' outright, but I don't agree that we should completely discount him just because he is a swimmer! He's 23 and has won 14 gold medals. I expect him to win over 20 in his career, and that, no matter how much easier it is to do in swimming, would be a phenomenal achievement.

It's great that we're third. I did surprise me as I remember seeing up at around 10th place not so long ago.

I've not watched that much of the Olympics, but it has occasionally been on the TV so I've watched the occasional event.

Yeah a lot of the Womens Track Athletics have poor fields this year. Only a few real stars in Womens Athletics now

The WR is 10.47 from memory, so hardly slow.

Edit: 10.49.

So it won't be long before we're sliding down the table again? ;)

I'm just saying, after seeing Bolt do 9.69 so easily watching the women struggle to beat 10.5 (even though they're women) is going to seem a bit lame.

I don't want to criticize them it's just that nothing they can do can really be an appropriate follow up to what Bolt did.

Has anyone noticed that the American media are ranking the overall medals table by total medals won, and not by gold medals like everyone else? Because that's the only way they're beating China

But think, the teams behind us in the top 10 of the medals table are: Germany; Australia; Japan; South Korea; Russia; Italy and Ukraine. Russia have a decent athletics team, but do any of the others? I might be wrong but I don't think they do traditionally!

Russia will beat us on the track but not by enough to catch us solely on there. Ukraine shouldnt catch us. But Korea and Japan have a few events outside the track where they should get some golds.

Aussies and Germany will be close

I don't understand how anyone can say this, I really don't. :? I don't mean to get in the whole women's physical capabilities discussion, it's bad enough anyway, but women can't help the way they're made.

But, blimey, third? That's rather good, I thought my parents were making it up when they told me!

Its not about thier pyshical capabilites. Its the fact that they dont have any major stars anymore bar the odd few, there's no real living legnds competing like we have in the mens and a lot of the events arent that open. Plus they arent really pushing the boundaries anymore and other than pole vault the times etc are going backwards

It doesn't help that Usain Bolt annihilated the competition and will probably do the 100/200 double. There just aren't any female superstars this Olympics.

I still don't get it. Just because they aren't prancing sideways over the line doesn't mean they aren't 'superstars', they're all just as amazing in my eyes.

Of course but superstars draw interest in sports...i.e. Phelps so wouldnt do any harm if we had a few women with such name value

But it isn't a woman's fault if the media isn't drawn to them, is it?

It's far less do-able for a woman to go out and win multiple golds, because we just aren't built for sport in the same way that men are.
I've (obviously) got a massive aversion to anyone saying there isn't talent in the womens game, when the women at the Olympics are the best in the whole world. It's completely ludicrous to say the talent isn't there, when it evidently is.

Okay, time to breathe and post in a different thread...
