Best: The Outer Worlds - Parvati + Junlei

Very recent, and oh-so-heartwarmingly done. Parvati's companion questline essentially sees you helping her start a relationship. Her character is very well written and developed, and handles her sexuality respectfully without ever reducing itself to novelty, despite the general lack of representation in the medium as a whole.

That was so beautifully written and executed, and is one of the reasons The Outer Worlds is my favourite game of last year.

Legitimately good

Guybrush and Elaine

Best: Sparrow and his/her dog in Fable 2. Now there was a loyal companion who saves your life at the end at the expense of their own. If you choose to bring back the innocents at the end rather than your dog and family it makes the lengthy post-game really lonely.

Worst: Fox and Falco. Fox is such a great friend and yet all Falco does is rib on him, act arrogant and get himself blown to pieces. Pratt.
