Rivals of Aether are so humble and just happy to have people be part of the community and playing the game. Very welcoming and all the top players I've come across are super nice as well.

The one that comes to mind is Pokemon Go.

When raiding was introduced in Pokemon Go, the local community playing the game in my town really went mad for it and I imagine it was the same all over. (For those who don't play or missed this after the initial release, the game introduced timed raid battles that would appear at gyms. You couldn't beat the toughest Pokemon on your own, so in order to defeat and earn the chance to catch them, you would have to battle them as part of a large group, which required players to meet at the same real world location to take part.)

So people set up Facebook messenger chat groups to organise raids, and you would have large groups of Pokemon fans meeting at random libraries/statues/park clocks/whatevers to have a chance to catch an Articuno or something. My partner and I played quite a bit at the time, and although I've drifted away from the game now, I still see people when I'm about town and recognise them from raids. A friend of mine was going through a tough time and properly threw himself into Pokemon Go, and has made some close real world friends through the game. I think it helped him a lot when he needed a reason to be out and about.

Same.

I don't play games enough really to even be part of a specific gaming community.

Return to Castle Woflenstein-OG Xbox. I played this game for months, and back then voice chat wasn't a cesspool. Met some great people during that time and we formed a band of brothers who would play it together, some of whom I still play with today, 20 odd years later.

Didn't the total play time in the wrap up show I played half the hours you had or something?

I was so good at the game, they had to close the studio and take it offline to stop me dominating the leaderboards like a ps4 agent Smith.

The original Xbox Live with the PG era guys (2 Bens Cora/Drum, Thanatos, Oh Teh Noes, Superking, many more names I'm sorry if I forget).

Halo 2
Street Fighter Anniversary
PGR 2
Outrun 2

Best era of online gaming

Probably a time and age thing but it lost the magic when it came to the 360. Probably because the original xbox didn't have as many games so we weren't all playing different stuff.

The old Gamesradar forum had a good few communities for online console gaming back in the early days.

I remember a lot of fun was had in Halo 2 with Random Fury. Lots of competitive games, as well as some great nights of 'Infection' before proper infection modes were even a thing. Lots of honesty needed with manual team switching when you were killed by a sword-wielding forumite. I still remember getting a Kilimanjaro for the first time in a sword slayer match, and me nor anyone else having a clue what it was. The downside of Halo 2 back then were all the American cheaters on Halo 2 who had standby buttons on their routers so could mess up the match for the opponents while they continued to play. However, we had fun mocking them.

Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow was the first game to introduce 'Spies vs Mercs' and similarly had a good community on here. I didn't play it quite as much as Halo 2, but it was great fun to play with familiar faces.

Mechassault 1 & 2 were other great early online titles, but if I recall correctly, there were less forum people active on those. I think Halo 2 came out around the same time as Mechassault 2 so it had an uphill battle.

In terms of randomers, there were fewer arseholes on Live back then. More people used voice chat back, so there was generally a lot more teamwork than there is currently. A lot more random friend requests too after having worked together with a good team in a match. I'm sure there were more arseholes than I remember, and rose-tinted glasses and all that, but those early days of Live were fantastic.

To be honest, since the Xbox days I haven't really been involved in any communities specific to certain games. I was relatively active on the WoW subreddit for a little while, but as time went by the community just ended up becoming a place to complain, and by reading too many negative things on a daily basis it ended up taking all the fun out of the game.

Last one I can remember being 'good' was Apex Legends. Not played it since season 2 though!

This forum when Untitled Goose game was released.

It came out exactly at the time when I first properly got into gaming and joined this forum. It was the first time, I ever felt in any way part of the discourse around a new release I really liked. I remember we was all pretty hyped for Untitled Goose when it first came out, I found it quite wholesome really. Love you guys
