One of the best parts of a game is the community that builds around them that you can discuss/experience the games with at the same time. With this in mind, what specific game communities have stood out for you that have added to the overall experience?

Legend of Zelda - Breath of the Wild
Easy pick this, everything from the pre-release hype (E3 2016 blow out was a fun time!) all the way through the release, discussing the game and everyone sharing their own experiences really added to this. People finding secret locations to random funny physics based videos it was cool being able to experience all of this together with the crew on here and over on GAF (I think GAF was still the one at the time, either that or 'Era)

Mario Kart 8/8 Deluxe
This was mostly down to the Monday Night MK sessions, I never got to join in all of them on GR but the ones I did were great fun and the chat in the thread during the nights as well was great

Kingpin - Life of Crime (Wireplay mid 1999)

A great forum which had a whole community dedicated to individual games that had servers allocated - one of which was Kingpin.

The game was the first that I played online, and I really made some great virtual friends on those boards, staying up late on my 56k dial up, racking up expensive phone bills whilst chatting through both the dedicated forum and ICQ.

I love this thread idea, Milner!

For me, a couple of games stand out.

Fallout 76 - Through Twitter and Discord I have been in touch with a number of gamers, generally around the camp building aspect of the game. The vast majority of folk are lovely; very approachable and willing to give support and praise to fellow players. It's great seeing snaps or videos of camps that others have built.

Mario Kart 8 - It was so good playing this regularly with folk from GRcade; particularly on the Wii U version. It was excellent meeting folk for the hour or so of racing every Monday night... fantastic fun! I was terrible at first but slowly improved and the first time I won a race I was jumping round my room :fp: ... :toot: .

Mostly in the past for me

Halo 2 and Rainbow Six - Around the same time we had GRcade nights which were just fantastic to be a part of. Every game would be full of jokes and great moments. Some of my happiest times with online games where because of these two games. And Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow but mostly that was me and MrKirov.

DriveClub - Sunday Driveclub was brilliant, again some funny moments and a driving game which we didn’t (well most of us) didn’t take too seriously. Check my YouTube for loads of videos on this.

Rocket League - Became a secondary game after we finished DriveClub.

Among Us - short lived but was fun while it lasted

Are You A Master Mario Maker - Got me involved into the game and really enjoyed building on others ideas. Unleashed my creativity and I loved the Sunday Twitch streams.

PLAY | Persona 3 Reloaded [3h]
WATCH | Ted Lasso S3, HiJack S1, Red Dwarf S4, Dexter S2
RACE | Chew Valley 10k (June), GNR (Sept), Cardiff Half (Oct)

Eve online community was vile and obnoxious, I loved every moment of it as a lot of it even outside of the usual RP groups was RP.

This was so good. So much fun. Week long time trial competitions, hours of close racing. God I miss Driveclub :(

------

A classic one for me was Trackmania Nations, which was a free to play stunt track based racer. Part time trial, part proper racing, and so much fun. I was so fast on the various time trial servers that I used to go on that I got invited to try out for a team, and then became part of that team. They had their own grcade style forum, so we used to chat on there all the time, and had a calendar of regular events, competitions etc. We'd also have rival matches where we'd challenge or be challenged by rival teams, then have a solid night of playing against them.

It was brilliant, and I think I was part of that for about 2 years.

Never been part of a community for a specific game, never been interested in doing so either.

GRcade is enough for me.

I too enjoyed playing with the AYA Master Mario Maker sub-community here.

I've seen some very friendly Reddit boards for games which are very obscure (at least in the west), like fan-translated RPG Maker games or mobile rhythm games. I think perhaps very small fandoms tend to be comparatively wholesome? I wouldn't say I've ever been part of those communities though.

Dark Souls has a modding Discord called ?ServerName? which is surprisingly helpful and positive all things considered.

Oh, I was really into Team Fortress 2 as a teenager. I had specific servers I liked, was in a clan, tried to build custom levels, etc. Was it a "good community" overall? I'm not sure. I met some nice people and definitely enjoyed it at the time, but there was a lot of community drama too.

Chill games with people from on here was probably the nicest aspect in retrospect.

I thought we had a pretty great Animal Crossing New Horizons community on here, especially in the first year when there was a lot of new stuff to see with the changing seasons, visiting other folks island, playing hide and seek! We still do have a good community for it as well but with the nature of the game it always wanes after the first year when events are repeats of the previous years. Still a great game though!

Worth noting I think we have a pretty general Pokémon and racing community on here as well. People are always up for helping on Pokémon, whether it be giving advice, trading or even battling  on the racing side it’d be tricky to set up races due to the different platforms we race on but hearing everyone’s experiences is great, Mario Kart to iRacing!

Going back aways to the halcyon days of 1999, me and a couple of IRL friends (remember those? :( ) used to spend hours and hours playing Delta Force 2 online - it was amazing playing on a server with 50 players, total chaos and some prime sniping fun was had :datass:

Looking back now it was a truly ugly game but that didn't seem to matter at the time.

Honourable mentions have to go to the OG Counter-Strike and Day of Defeat mods waaay back when, I was even in a CS clan with some school friends. Good times

The only video game community I've really enjoyed is the animal crossing one on here. I love opening the gates and meeting you all, playing games, exploring your islands and seeing your ideas, and having a laugh. It's always a joy for me and it got me through the worst birthday I ever had and all of lockdown. Its also made me get to know some of you more and I've loved every minute!

I wish I'd got Mario Kart 8 in time to join in with Mario Kart Mondays on here. I know I'm racing DarkRula some time but I'd love to race more of you!

I'm in a Shop Titans guild and discord group on mobile, but it's quiet 95% of the time.

Definitely Counter Strike Source.

I think it was Jaz from Gamesradar who introduced me to a clan of CSS players who had the shared interest of metal music. I played as part of the clan for years as a teenager and it was a fantastic bunch of great guys.

Makes me feel sad and nostalgic when I think about past relationships like that. Wouldn't have a clue how to reach any of them now.
