Over the weekend, I tried a few xbox live demos (Soul Calibur IV, Star Wars). My lasting impression is they were both miserly in the extreme and not really worth the download. Why bother, giving you a taster if it's going to be so brief? And if you're going to do a demo, make it good, as both were pretty rubbish.

With that in mind, what was the last demo you enjoyed? And what would you class as your best demo ever?

I'd say the best demo ever, was Sega Saturn Magazine's Panzer Dragoon Saga demo.

Panzer Dragoon Saga was one I loved I also was a huge fan of Oddworld Abe's Odyssey's demo.

The demo for the first Ratchet and Clank game. Can't remember the name of the other level but you got to play on Metropolis, the cityscape absolutely blew me away, plus the music was brill.

I always thought the fight night demo was great.

It came out of nowhere, looked amazing and gave you a good feel for how the game would play.

Recently I thought the Bioshock demo was fantastic. A decent length and it introduced the game wonderfully. I imagine that it helped sell 1000s of extra copies of the game.

The Crackdown demo was superb. The perfect way to market your game to people; let them actually play it for more than 5 minutes.

I think the Metal Gear Solid demo for ps1 was the best, it was long enough to make you really become attached to it.

Metal Gear Solid.
Metal Gear Solid 2.
Tekken 3 (came in a special black case).
Shenmue 2. That seemed to go on forever.
Broken Sword. Without it, I would never have even contemplated the game.
Resident Evil 2. The clock made me keep going back to see if I could get any further.
Theme Hospital for having quirky music that didn't feature in the final game. Bastards.

Worst

Test Drive Unlimited.
Broken Sword 3 (demo timed out practically straight away)
Jak & Daxter. 'I know! Lets set the demo on the greyest, least charming part of the entire game.' You had to chase a muse.

In fact any demo that times out after about 5 minutes. What a strawberry floating waste of time.

Dead Rising, it was the only demo I've ever played more than once.

Not sure about best demo ever but demos that stand out in my mind are:

Cannon Fodder
Tekken 3 - (was not a fan of the first 2 Tekkens) so this "limited edition" demo sold the game to me.
Metal Gear Solid demo on PS1
Bioshock

There was a timed (original) GTA demo on PC that I played non-stop for aaaaaaages before getting the full game. It lasted about 20 minutes or something and just allowed complete freedom during that time and considering the groundbreaking style it was fantastic.

I, like many others used to wait for that next pro evolution soccer demo licking our lips in antipation, it was more exciting that getting the actual game!

Remember last year when there was week after week of disappointment at the non release of the pes 2008 demo pre full release, it was so frustrating for the ps3 owners, the sheer number of topic dedicated to one demo every week on the official playstation forums was actually hilarious when you look at it now!

Future Cop LAPD's demo. I never managed to find a copy of the full game, but this demo allowed for one rockhard awsome level to be played in co-op or single player. I can't even begin to say how many times I played it.

The Demos for Future Cop LAPD and for Broken Sword were both awesome.

The Future Cop demo let you do a full level in co-op, me and my friend played that quite a few times before I managed to find the game.

The Broken Sword demo was a perfect introduction to the game, it started with the intro and ended at a good point that made you want to run out and buy the game. I did, though it was hard to find the game. This is probably my favourite demo because it was so perfect, like reading a really good opening chapter to a book which leaves you on a cliffhanger desperate to find out what happens next.

Others that spring to mind were Tombi, No One Can Stop Mr Domino, Bust a Groove, Tomb Raider, Klonoa and Crash Bandicoot on the Demo 1 disc that came with the PS1.

EDIT: Didn't see the post before mine, glad i'm not the only one! o/
