Best Remake?

I was ruminating on this question while sneaking a bit of Tony Hawk's in on work time earlier, I've played dozens of remade games at this point and while some (THPSHD) are woefully shite, others (Resident Evil 2, THPS 1+2) have been genuinely brilliant games that, in some ways, completely surpass their predecessor. As we get to the point where some of the classics of childhood are 20 and even 30 years old, remakes are becoming much more prevalent within the industry as well, particularly in the last couple of years.

So I guess my question is - what, in your opinion, is the best remade game? I'll weigh in with my thoughts in a little while.

I'm playing through Resident Evil 2 at the moment and it is amazing. I'd probably have to pick that.

I remember really enjoying the Resident Evil and Metal Gear Solid remakes on the Gamecube but I know the latter was a little divisive.

Pokemon Let's Go I enjoyed but it wasn't exactly the most ambitious. Same with Ocarina of Time 3D-although it was very well done.

Resident Evil 1 & 2, Twin Snakes and Metroid: Zero Mission are by far the best ones I’ve played. So good they made the original versions redundant to me.

There have been a lot of great ones but I’d probably have to say one of the Resident Evils (GameCube or RE2). The graphics on the remake of RE was so far ahead of anything else I’d ever seen, and to this day it still looks good on a 4K TV. I do wonder what could be achieved using that pre-rendered technique on current hardware, even if it was just a 10 minute short or something!

I also thought Tomb Raider Anniversary was phenomenal, unfortunately let down by them ballsing up the T-Rex bit. What a perfect send off for the PS2 though. I think it was pretty much its last major release too.

Some of their practices really suck (not putting the whole game on a disc; pre-order exclusive demos) but Activision have been four for four on their PS1 remakes.

I think Resident Evil 2 takes the cake but REmake and Tony Hawk's are strong contenders.

It's got to be THPS1&2. It's a great game by modern standards and then it has all the nostalgia of the originals included.

Maybe Link's Awakening for me - it's very faithful yet brings some much needed quality of life changes that make the previous versions hard to recommend to new players. The new art style is also perfect for the game.

Link's Awakening was a lovely remake but the performance issues were disappointing.

They are a little disappointing but they were never gameplay impacting for me.

If I was being a pedant that tells you what you're thinking, which I am about to be, I would say that it was definitely gameplay impacting but not game enjoyment impacting. :simper:

Tony Hawk as they have put the first 2 games together and still sold it at a good price £40. They've changed a couple of things like the crash animation to make the game more enjoyable to play and it's just a brilliant experience.

I enjoyed resident evil 2. Especially the graphics and animation.

Resident Evil ReMake was exceptionally good at the time.

FF7, Spyro and Ocarina of time 3ds all looked lovely.

The slowdown is mainly noticeable on transitioning in/out of buildings immediately after a loading screen, so it's not... input impacting? It's gameplay impacting in so much as affecting the time between active moments of gameplay.

It's like how I'd say I would have really enjoyed Just Cause 3 were it not for the long load times. I know what you mean in that it affects the overall game experience (badly unfortunately in JC3's case) but it's also clearly differentiated from the game performing badly during active moments of gameplay, like slowing down mid-combat leading to mistimed inputs or whatever.

So... whatever the phrase is for that

Off the top of my head, Pokemon Fire Red & Leaf Green. Later remakes of the early games don't quite have the same shine (though Heart Gold & Soul Silver come close) as the original Red & Blue still had plenty of flaws, so the quality of life updates and full colour brought over from Gens 2/3 really make those definitive to me. Same goes for REmake.

I don't know how you'd classify it, but is there anyone that would play MGS3 Snake Eater over the demonstrably better Subsistence?

I sort of posted about this here a couple of months ago - I'm still undecided which version I prefer. I agree Subsistence is demonstrably better but I think that's because the differences in gamefeel of the fixed camera angles aren't easily demonstrable! It's more about the impact on atmosphere which is a lot harder to quantify. I'm certainly glad to have played both versions, and when I recall some areas I still picture them from their fixed camera angles.

Super Stardust HD is fantastic. The twin-stick gameplay improves immeasurably on the Amiga version. I did wonder if it could count as a remake, but given that it's still basically Asteroids, I'm going to allow it.

It is good, has more of an action focus which isn't as satisfying and can be beaten very quickly and doesn't have as much replay as 2.

Well worth playing if you can get your hands on it for cheap or even a rental tbh.

It's excellent but 2 is far better. 3 is a short, fast paced action romp.

Much the same as the original games.
