Tangential to the thread at best, but have you ever seen A Boy and His Dog? It's a 70's post-nuclear apocalypse sci-fi in an alternate universe where advanced robotics and animal telepathy were the advances made in place of the space race. It's directly referenced several times in Fallout (not least with Dogmeat in Fallout 3) and is a good film to recommend to anyone who likes the Fallout setting.

No, but I’ve added that to my film list. Cheers.

I'd probably recommend the book over the film actually.

The whole film is here. Started watching but the voice acting for the dog is getting on my nerves.

Thanks Jawa! I was going to post it today as it was pretty late last night

Some of the buildings were already there (the ones that can't be entered essentially) and I built around them - so looking at the first image mine are the big house on the right, the little hut attached to the existing house in the centre, and the generator building lit up hidden at the back. I also built the defences (three perimeter fence sections and two guard posts), the water purifier (it's an industrial size one placed in the water), the "farm", some other crafting stations, and wired up all the electricity/lights.

In the video clip I enter the three buildings I made and walk up on every defensive platform I built, so that explains it better than me :toot:

I'd have liked to add more, but I'm practically at the build limit now. That's also why I can't add any automated defences like turrets as they take up a load of the build space :(

I guess the building is pretty big. Perhaps Bethesda will increase the building object capacity in the future? It'd be neat if they did as you'd be able to push the system even further.

I hope so, compared to Fallout 4 there are so many more objects to build with (even if I still need to unlock most) but the two big limitations are the build size (some of them were so much larger in 4) and the building on foundations requirements (not the worst when you get used to it, but the stairs are so much worse because of it so building second floors and tower-like buildings is a lot harder). I would absolutely love both of those issues to be addressed.

I would also love the ability to save a camp outright, rather than the limited blueprinting, as I tend to build specifically for the location I'm in and you can't really recreate it with a blueprint. That or multiple camps, but I don't think that will be added.

Seems like the game might be going free to play pretty soon...

https://segmentnext.com/2019/01/21/repo ... e-to-play/

Fallout 76 has had a rough launch but no one really knew how bad the situation was until reports of the game possibly going free to play started surfacing.

The news remains unconfirmed but it looks like preparations for Fallout 76 going free to play are possibly underway. EB Games, one of the biggest video game retailers in Australia, is reportedly removing physical copies of Fallout 76 from its shelves.

According to reports, EB Games has pulled new copies of Fallout 76 from its shelves. It is a distributor recall and has nothing to do with EB Games itself pulling the plug on Fallout 76. Tricentennial or Power Armor editions are still available so it is only the base game copies that are being pulled for the time being.

EB Games Australia currently has no new base game physical copies on sale. In fact, there is a buy one, get one free offer up for Fallout 76 pre-owned copies at EB Games Australia. Interestingly, at the time of writing this, Amazon had 28 copies left in stock for Fallout 76 that is strange considering the size of this retailer.

It seems the new shipment hasn’t arrived for Amazon sellers. It is curious how Amazon sellers are low on Fallout 76 physical copies.

Still, the game is available to buy at multiple retailers across the globe so we cannot say for certain what exactly is going on. It is possible that this is just a situation with EB Games Australia because at the time of this writing, EB Games New Zealand is still selling physical copies of Fallout 76 at its storefronts.

Considering how poorly the game sold across the globe, going free to play may not be the worst of ideas at the moment. Fallout 76 crashed and burned soon after its release and Bethesda’s blunders made matters even worse.

This is a developing story so will have more for you once more information comes to light.

Inevitable really, but I'd have expected it to at least go GamePass first.

We'll see.

I think more people would likely give it a try and even if it is on the broken side, may stick with it if it's fun and drop money on the microtransactions. People are less likely to drop money to drop money on a game so negatively received and full of microtransactions that are more suited to F2P games. I know a fair few games have microtransactions in them now, but seeing the amount in this and things like I dunno a potted plant being something you buy with Fallout funny bucks screams of a f2p game, imo

The shop items are horrendously over-priced and cosmetic / optional; and, in many cases, pretty poorly designed. I don't get the idea that folk would want to pay out for such things rather than paying a straight £25 (or less, now!) fee up front.

To get people in it, people have seen the news and will be put off by it if they need to pay, however, if they can give it a shot for free they probably will and may go "actually this aint too bad" they are also more likely to buy stuff from the store.

I think it would be a good move from Bethesda to make the base game free or at the very least put it on Game Pass and make money from people buy stuff in game, it gets more people playing and then there are more people that may shell out on DLC down the line.

It's quite easy to get atoms (the store currency) in game, I've bought several CAMP items and still have plenty of atoms spare. The items are all cosmetic, but more than that they are just additional to the plenty of items already available in game. The game doesn't feel like a F2P game at all because of how ignorable the microtransactions are. I don't see how it could be a viable business model without rebalancing the game for the worse.

Keeping up player numbers is also not much of a concern due to the low server cap and because of how the game is best experienced in single player anyway, so I don't see the need to keep a high player base to prevent what players exist from abandoning the game as a pressing concern or driver to go F2P.

From what I've heard Paladins is the same in that the micro transactions are purely cosmetic, and can be completely ignored and while you don't start with every character you can earn them via in game current. Exactly the same with Fallout 76. The difference is Paladins is a f2p game and Fallout 76 was £50 or more at launch. Fortnite is the same, everything can be earned, everything is cosmetic and it is free.

The skins in Fortnite are a very visible thing, if you don't pay any money (either to buy one directly or to buy a battle pass so you can earn one), you're stuck in the default skin. In Fallout 76 there are loads of outfits available in the game, so the ones available as microtransactions are only additional alternatives as opposed to being the only way of customising your character.

It's not just that cosmetics can be ignored, it's that there are plenty of cosmetics in the base game and the microtransaction cosmetics are only additional to them. It's also not difficult to "earn" the ones available in the base game, you will find plenty just through playing the game, just like in previous Fallouts. There is no choice between paying or grinding.

That's all a good thing, but it doesn't seem to make for a very viable F2P business model.
