I'm still wavering on this, but I *think* I am going to dive in! Been watching lots of vids and there looks to be plenty to explore.

Bethesda needs to strawberry floating stop and take a hard look at itself. This is not how a game company should operate. :fp:

The problem you have is gamers everywhere will buy it without a care in the world and Bethesda will just think 'Hey, why bother doing more work than we do, when people buy our half-arsed gooseberry fool anyway?'

Oh, you're absolutely right, and it applies to all the major (and qutie a few minor) industry players. I just feel that their basic standards (and probably their pride in their work) have fallen so dramatically that a harsh wake-up call is necessary. If they won't take a moment to look in the mirror reevaluate their standards, we as consumers have a responsibility to say enough is enough and turn our backs on them. But we won't, because people are fickle, irrational, apathetic and Bethesda (as most developers do) knows it.

Perhaps if enough of us could sign government petitions to demand legislation on basic product quality..? In this digital age, demanding regulatory oversight of the industry might be all we can do.

I do agree that many publishers have got into the mindset of "a disc is a download key". I think part of the issue is that, particularly for MMO-type games, the disc approach doesn't really work now. Such games are in development right up until launch... and are further developed post launch. Tbh the resultant frustration doesn't really apply if you choose the download version but, for the disc option - which has been manufactured at least six weeks before release and can't hold the full install size - it is a pain. It is one of the factors that has led me to switch to downloading rather than buying discs. But, yes, for folk who prefer discs - and/or don't have the option of downloading - these are frustrating times.

I think that, over time, we have become "conditioned" to accepting a poor deal from publishers. But... a "quality" bar just isn't going to happen and, tbh, I wouldn't want one. Who would assess the "quality" of a game? It would be pretty subjective. I do, however, agree that people should vote with their wallet - if a game doesn't appeal, or you are unhappy with the publishing, don't buy it.

Finally - going into Bethesda Defence Force mode - I feel that Fallout 76 is suffering at present because the "internet opinion" machine is in full force. The game style isn't what some folk wanted, the engine isn't what some folk wanted and so everything about the game is being ridiculed... even by some folk who have not looked too closely at the game. The Beta was a good idea but the resultant bugs are being called out as "major issues" and that gains bad publicity. The game certainly will require on-going development but, well, that applies to all MMOs. There are plenty of glooomy videos out there but look a little deeper and there are positive ones, too. Even so... people are, of course, free to call out their views and that's exactly as it should be.

Edit: Fior clarity, my use of the description "internet opinion" is not referring to GR posts; more the wave of consensus across the web.

Have to say I find this kind of opinion because of a required update size (assuming that's what you are responding to) pretty ridiculous, especially for a game designed only to be played online.

So you're perfectly fine with day one patches that exceed the size of the entire game?

I wouldn't say "fine", personally, but I feel there should be a recognition that this is an online game and - as posted above - I think that discs are now facing challenges in coping with this style of game.

Well, until 5G blankets the globe and internet black spots are a thing of the past, discs are going to continue to be a necessity, which means a certain level of base product completeness is required. If the mammoth patch is related to bug fixes etc, Bethesda should really be doing that sort of testing itself and not expecting its clients to do it, and if it does expect consumers to do it, they should be getting money back on the game they've paid for - pay, essentially. Are they not QA contractors, effectively?

I see your point, Alvin; as I said, I feel that many publishers now treat discs as a download key. Perhaps the way forward would be to delay release until a game is "completed"... although, for online-focused games, that point is never really going to be reached. Equally, with a disc only capable of holding circa 50 Gb, large titles would still necessitate a hefty download... unless, say, two discs were supplied. It's a tricky situation but - specifically for '76 as it is an online-only game - it may be that the download route would be the better option for some folk.
