I can't post links here yet, but I just checked and the game is available for both Xbox and PC as a part of Game Pass. Hopefully gives more people the opportunity to take a look.

Excellent, if it's available on PC then I'll no doubt give it a shot at some point. Ignoring this recent levelling kerfuffle it sounded like they had managed to meaningfully improve the experience since the initial divisive release so it will be interesting to see what it plays like.

I'm hoping the Series S/X helps the frame rate, as it's not the smoothest on PS4, and this makes aiming a bit of a pain. F4 was a fair bit smoother, and you had VATs there to help you out.

I didn't get that far through F76 as I got distracted, so will likely just start from scratch when I get a next-gen console. I always prefer the opening hours of Fallout games anyway. When you're weak, vulnerable and feel.tje foreboding atmosphere of the environment (before you're a tooled up God) and when there's a full map.to explore tugging you in either direction.

For what I understand, for veteran players there was basically no endgame in terms of challenge, so that's something the game needed to address. Not sure why they didn't just increase the level/rewards in the dungeony caves and indoor areas and stuff. Like how Destiny has the easy, open world patrol areas, but the end-game stuff is separated from the main game.

I'm not sure it was something they needed to address. If you've finished the game and explored everywhere, congrats, go play something else that you haven't rinsed hundreds of hours of content out of or start a new character and play it again. I just don't understand people playing the game like Destiny, skipping through the actual interesting world exploration stuff and spending their time farming endgame loot drops and fighting bullet sponge bosses.

They played the game like Destiny because that's the type of game Bethesda made - they made Fallout into a live service MMO game, the type of thing that is supposed to keep players visiting, playing and grinding. And that comes with a need for new content, challenges or items.

If they'd made a single player game like the others, then there it would have been a finite experience and players would have drifted away after finishing the quests. Although you *can* play F76 as a single player game, that's not what Bethesda intended.

It is what the game is better at though :P

I think they tried to make the game both, and over time it's shifting more exclusively to the live service model than it was at launch. I wonder if it'll end up that the sweet spot for playing the game was a couple of updates in when they'd done some bug fixing and made some QOL improvements but hadn't yet brought out Wastelanders and rebalanced towards endgame content.

That update was terrific. Personally I had enjoyed the "lone wanderer" experience of the previous "no NPC" world but I have to say that the addition of human NPCs (and the Settlers' Foundation and Raiders' Crater areas) has brough some life into the wasteland.

And, yeah, I agree that the game - for better or worse - is very much a "live service" experience now. I am comfortable with this approach but I know that it doesn't suit all tastes. It's designed to be continually updated and adjusted very much like a MMO; with multiplayer been a big part of the game... although, absolutely, it is still possible to play it as a single player game. I rarely team up with others but I love visiting CAMPs, buying/selling and popping up a few emotes :-).

I was interested in hearing your thoughts on Wastelanders jawa, cool that you like it! How does it work being online with other players - I'm guessing the NPCs can't be killed and are always in the same place regardless of their quests (because people will be at different progress with them)?

It works pretty well, Orange. Some places - such as the new inn in the Forest area - are "instanced"; this means that once, you enter the property, you will be the only player in that place (bar the NPCs, of course). In other areas, such as Settlers' Foundation and Raiders' Crater, other players may well be in the areas as the same time as you. I haven't tried but I *assume* you can't kill these particular NPCs! There are other NPCs dotted all over; some of them can be spoken with and others have missions for you to tackle, which feels good and brings a bit of life to the wasteland. There are still plenty of desolate areas for folk who like to wander alone, though.

I've played it once and it seemed alright. I'd rather play it - as intended - with a few people, unlikely to happen though.

I remember jumping on, walking to a shop like thing and taken to a guy and thinking strawberry float me that's Jason Mewes and it was.

I play this every few days, it's great, looks and runs exceptionally well and loads really fast as it's on my SSD.

It's also permanent now in Gamepass with the whole Xbox owning Bethesda thing. :)

Neat, I didn't know about the instancing stuff, seems like a pretty good approach in the end then!

The main thing stopping me jumping on to try it out is that I deleted the game to make room on my PS4 and the install is massive

I play this on and off, rage-deleted it a few times because the difficulty is absolutely brutal - trying to fight enemies 3 times my level when I’m on my way to a location that is intrinsically tied to new players.
I thought the new update would fix this problem but it’s just as bad - I can see the logic, but they’ve eliminated the feeling of progression. Never do you feel in a position of strength - you’re always near death with crap guns, thirsty, hungry and skint. It’s ridiculous. I bought some Atoms to redeem some caps on those board game-type season things but the in-game economy is just knackered. Stimpaks are like 70 caps but I can sell you mine for 6, with a level 3 trading perk card equipped? Get bent.

Ah! It sounds like you visited the Wayward Inn, Pedz - that's the new main quest starting point location following the Wastelanders update :-).

Photek wrote:...looks and runs exceptionally well...

Photek, yeah, for an MMO the graphics do look pretty neat and, in particular, the weather changes are very well done - I love atmospheric lighting in the game. Radstorms are fairly infrequent but they look lovely, too.

OrangeRKN wrote:Neat, I didn't know about the instancing stuff...

There is more to come, too - before the end of this year we're gonna be able to have instanced CAMPS! :o . This means placing a doorway in your existing CAMP which leads to an underground area and, within that area, your CAMP building budget will be vastly increased. I'm super keen to experience how this aspect works and to see the creative possibilities.

It sure is a big old download. A lot of stuff has been added this year and it is pretty hefty.

I think I'm out of this game now.

I've bloomin' loved it for the past year; I have put a lot of time into it and thoroughly enjoyed playing. Even so, the enemy / level changes (as mentioned recently in this thread) and the subsequent tinkering of these elements just hasn't gelled with me and I feel that the game no longer supports the more casual style of format that I employed with it.

I'm disappointed that I'm gonna give it up but, hey, there's plenty of other games out there. I recently started Fallout 4 and I'll give that a go instead. Fallout 76 has, for me personally, been a favourite game during this gen but nothing lasts forever.

(Tears).
